Venturi Scrubber

This document discusses venturi scrubbers, which are a type of wet scrubber used for air pollution control. It removes pollutants from air using inertial and diffusional forces. The document provides equations to calculate the pressure drop and efficiency of a venturi scrubber. It then outlines procedures for setting up and conducting an experiment using a venturi scrubber to remove particulate matter from an air stream. Recommendations are made to improve the design and experimentation process.

THEORY

Wet scrubber is a technology that use for air pollution control. The technology of this
venturi scrubber is by removal of air pollutants by inertial and diffusional interception.
(EPA) There are some other technology that wet scrubber that can be used such as
gravity separators, centrifugal collectors, fabric filters (baghouse filters) and
electrostatic precipitators (ESP) respectively. From all the technology the most
effective is wet scrubber. (Bashir Ahmed Danzomo, DECEMBER 2012) Wet scrubber
contain many type such as spray tower scrubber, packed bed scrubber, mechanically
aided scrubber and venturi scrubber. (Bashir Ahmed Danzomo, DECEMBER 2012)

Aluminium is a chemical that has size small size of particle that harmful to the human.
By using this it can give effect such as oxidative damages, cytotoxic and genotoxic eff
ects, and inflammatory events. (Imen Mrad, 15 September 2017)

The calculation use for this experiment is

𝐴1 2
𝑉𝑎𝑖𝑟 𝜌 ( − 1)
𝐴2 2
∆𝑃 =
2
This calculation show the formula to get the pressure drop from the venturi scrubber.
The next calculation then involved in this experiment is the efficiency of venturi
scrubber
𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒 (𝑔)
𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 = × 100%
𝑖𝑛𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 (𝑔)

From both equation above the liquid to gas ratio can be calculated by using the formula
of
𝐿 𝑄
=
𝐺 𝑣𝐴
PROCEDURE
GENERAL START-UP PROCEDURE

1. Close all valves except for valves V5 and V7.

2. Fill water tank with clean water by connecting a hose to inlet valve V6.
3. Connect another hose to drain valve of water tank for draining purpose.
4. Connect air supply onto pressure regulator.
5. Switch on the main power supply

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
1. Switch on the blower and adjust the air blower speed to 10m/s.

2. Select which water inlet to let the water flow inside the venturi. Open valve V3
to let the water supply flow into the venturi.

3. Switch on the water pump. Adjust the gate valve, V3 and by-pass valve, V5
until the flow meter (FT01) shows 6 LPM.

4. After the water level in flooded elbow overflow to the venturi chamber, adjust
valve V11 below the chamber to maintain the water level.

5. Switch on pneumatic vibrate and regulate the pressure regulator to 2 bar then
open the powder feeder valve V1.
6. After all powder has been fed into the chamber, switch off the pneumatic
regulator by putting the pressure regulator to 0 bar.

7. Switch off the pump and wait until all water in the chamber to drain off through
the powder collecting container attached below the chamber.
8. Collect the sample from V4 and V11.

9. Dry the collected powder and record the weight of the collected dry powder as
M2.

10. Clean off any excess powder observe onto equipment before conducting
experiment again.

11. Repeat steps 1 to 10 by increasing FTO1 to 8LPM, 10LPM and 13LPM by

regulating valve V3.
SHUT-DOWN PROCEDURE
1. Clean the venturi scrubber by using spray nozzle.
2. Lower down the spray nozzle to desired level.
3. Open valves V2, V4, V5, V7 and V11.
4. Adjust the flow rate to clean the venturi scrubber.
5. Switch off the pump and blower.
6. Switch off the main power supply and control panel.

RECOMMENDATION

1. Change venturi scrubber into the spray tower scrubber which is simpler. (Bashir
Ahmed Danzomo, DECEMBER 2012)
2. Use different size of particulate matter to compare the efficiency
3. Use a low pressure differential venturi scrubber to get a good performance
4. Increase the temperature for the drying to ensure no moisture content in the
sample
