Problem Set 1

The document contains 12 problems related to fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. The problems involve calculating heads, powers, efficiencies, speeds, and pressure drops for pumps, turbines, compressors, fans and pipes based on given parameters like density, viscosity, diameter, flow rate, pressure, temperature and speed. Expressions are also required for thrust on an impeller, efficiency of a ceiling fan and pressure-temperature relationships for gas expansion processes.

ASSIGNMENT - 01

1) A centrifugal pump operating at 1000 rpm develops a head of 30 m. If the speed is increased to 2000 rpm
and the pump operates with the same efficiency, what is the head developed by the pump?

2) A large hydraulic turbine is to generate 300 kW at 1000 rpm under a head of 40 m. For initial testing, a 1:4
scale model of the turbine operates under a head of 10 m. Calculate the power generated by the model (in
KW).

3) A compressor has an isentropic efficiency of 85% at a pressure ratio of 4.0. Calculate the corresponding
polytropic efficiency. Take ϒ=1.4

4) A multistage (full scale) centrifugal pump running at 500 rpm delivers 5 m3/s, against a head of 100 m. A
model of this pump delivers 0.3 m3/s and the power output is 100 KW at an efficiency of 90%. Calculate
the speed of the model.

5) Using Dimensional Analysis derive an expression for the efficiency of a ceiling fan. Given that the
efficiency of ceiling fan depends upon following variables:
Density (), Viscosity(), Discharge(Q), Diameter(D), Speed(N)

6) A water turbine is to be designed to produce 27 MW when running at 93.7 rpm under a head of 16.5 m. A
model turbine with an output of 37.5 kW is to be tested under dynamically similar conditions with a head
of 4.9 m. Calculate the model speed and scale ratio. Assuming a model efficiency of 88%, estimate the
volume flow rate through the model.

7) Air is expanded in a multi-stage axial flow turbine, the pressure drop across each stage being very small.
Assuming that air behaves as a perfect gas with ratio of specific heats, derive pressure-temperature
relationships for the following processes:
(i) Reversible adiabatic expansion.
(ii) Irreversible adiabatic expansion, with small stage efficiency.
(iii) Reversible expansion in which the heat loss in each stage is a constant fraction k of the
enthalpy drop in that stage.
(iv) Reversible expansion in which the heat loss is proportional to the absolute temperature T.

8) Derive an expression for the thrust developed by an impeller, which depends on angular velocity (),
approach velocity (V), dynamic viscosity (), density (), propeller diameter (D), and the compressibility
of the medium measured by the local velocity of the sound (C).

9) A multi stage centrifugal pump running at 500 rpm delivers 6m3/s against a head of 100m. A model of
this pump delivers 0.4m3/s when it consumes 100 KW at efficiency of 90%. Estimate the speed of the
model and scale ratio.
10) A single stage centrifugal pump was designed to work against a manometric head of 30 m with an
impeller diameter of 300mm. When the unit is running at 1500 rpm, it produced a head of 25 m. Suggest
how pump can develop the designed head.

11) A large body of fluid stream is flowing with a velocity (V) over a thin a rectangular plate of length (L),
and width (b). The plane of the plate is at right angles to the fluid stream velocity (V). Find the factors
affecting its drag resistance (D). Also consider the following parameters besides aforementioned: density
(), viscosity (), bulk modulus of elasticity (K).

12) A liquid flows steadily through a long horizontal pipe. Find an expression for pressure drop per unit
length of the pipe if same depends on following parameters.
Average flow speed (V), Pipe diameter (D), density (), viscosity (), inside roughness of pipe (ε).
