Unit 6: Centrifugal Pumps

1. Define a centrifugal pump. Explain the working of a single stage centrifugal pump with
sketches.
2. Differentiate between the volute casing and vortex casing for the centrifugal pump.
3. Define the terms suction head, delivery head, static head and manometric head.
4. What do you mean by manometric efficiency, mechanical efficiency and overall efficiency
of a centrifugal pump?
5. How will you obtain the expression for minimum starting speed of a centrifugal pump?
6. What is priming? Why is it necessary?
7. What do you understand by characteristic curves of a pump? What is the significance of the
characteristic curves?
8. Draw and discuss the operating characteristics of a centrifugal pump.
9. What are the effects of cavitation? Give the necessary precautions against cavitation?
10. A centrifugal pump having outer diameter equal to two times the inner diameter and running
at 2000 rpm works against a total head of 75 m. The velocity of flow through the impeller is
constant and equal to 3 m/s. The vanes are set back at an angle of 300 at outlet. If the outer
diameter of the impeller 600 mm and width at outlet is 50 mm, determine vane angle at inlet,
work done per second by impeller, manometric efficiency.
11. A centrifugal pump is running at 1000 r.p.m. the outlet vane angle of the impleller is 300
and velocity of flow at outlet is 3 m/s. the pump is working against a total head of 30 m and
the discharge through the pump is 0.3m3/s. if the manometric efficiency of the pump is 75%’
determine: (1) the diameter of the impeller, and (2) the width of the impeller at outlet
12. The diameters of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are 20 cm and 40 cm
respectively. Determine the minimum starting speed if it works against a head of 25m.
13. The diameter of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are 300 mm and 600
mm respectively. The velocity of flow at outlet is 2.5 m/s and vanes are set back at an angle of
450 at outlet. Determine the minimum starting speed of the pump if the manometric efficiency
is 75 %.
