REVIEW QUESTIONS FOR INTERNAL TEST 1

PART –A

1 Define composite materials.

2 What are the major constituents in composite materials?

3 List down the reinforcement materials and resins used in composite materials.

4 Explain the difference between isotropic and anisotropic materials.

5 What is a particulate composite?

6 Define composite materials.

7 Define laminate.

8 Why are fiber reinforcements of a thin diameter?

9 Write four applications of composite materials?

10 What are the properties of matrices? Write down its usage.

PART-B & C
1 Explain the different types of reinforcements and matrices used in the composite materials with
their properties, functions, advantages and disadvantages.
2 For an E-Glass polyester sample the following are the data for the resin burnt off test. Weight of an
empty crucible = 11.152 gm. Weight of the crucible and sample before burnt off = 11.521 gm and after
burnt = 11.3221 gm. Calculate the fibre weight and volume fraction and density of the composite
material. Assume the density of fibre and matrix as 3 gm/ml and 1.5 gm/ml.
3 Obtain an expression for E1, E2, G12 and ν12 in terms of material properties with respect to principal
material directions using mechanics of material approach.
4 Calculate Vf and ρc for a composite laminate containing 30% weight of E-glass. ρf = 2.54 g/cc and ρc = 1.1
g/cc.
5 What are the advantages of composite material? And explain its area of application?
6 What weight of glass fibers must be added to 1 kg of epoxy to produce a composite with a density of
1700 kg/m3, ρf = 2500kg/m3 and ρm = 1200 kg/m3.
7 A glass /epoxy lamina consists of 70% fibre volume fractions using properties of glass & epoxy. Determine
the,
i) density of lamina
ii) mass fraction of the glass & epoxy
iii) volume of the composite lamina, if the mass of the lamina is 44 kg
iv) volume and mass of glass & epoxy
Take ρf = 2500 kg/m3, ρm = 1200 kg/m3.

8 Calculate the longitudinal modulus and tensile strength of a unidirectional composite containing 60% by
volume of carbon fibres [E1f = 294 GPa, σ1fu = 5.6 GPa, σmu = 105 MPa], Compare these values with the
experimentally determined values of E1 = 162 GPa, σ1u = 2.94 GPa. What fraction of the load is carried by
the fibres in the composite?
