18BMAI01 Mathematical Statistics I Assignment - I

This document contains 11 problems related to probability and statistics. Some of the problems involve calculating the probability of events occurring based on sampling with or without replacement from finite populations where the composition is known. Other problems involve calculating conditional probabilities based on information provided about marginal and joint probabilities.

Assignment – I
1. Five salesman of A, B, C, D and E of a company are considered for a three member trade
delegations to represent the company in an international trade conference. Construct the
sample space and find the probability that
(i) A is selected (ii) A is not selected
(iii) either A or B (not both) is selected.
2. An urn contains 6 white, 4 red and 9 black balls. If 3 balls are drawn at random. Find the
probability that
(i) two of the balls are white. (iii) none is red.
(ii) one is of each colour (iv) at least one is white.
3. A box contains 6 red, 4 white and 5 black balls. A person draws 4 balls from the box at
random. Find the probability that among the balls drawn is at least one ball of each colour.
4. A bag contains 17 counters marked with the numbers 1 to 17. A counter is drawn and
replaced; a second drawing is then made. What is the probability that
(i) the first number drawn is even and the second odd?
(ii) The first number is odd and the second even?
(iii) How will the result (i) and (ii) be effected if the first counter drawn is not replaced.
5. A committee of 4 people is to appointed from 3 officers of the production department, 4
officers of the purchase department, 2 officers of the sales department and 1 chartered
account. Find the probability of forming the committee in the following manner.
(i) There must be one from each category
(ii) If should have at least one from the purchase department
(iii)The chartered accountant must be in the committee.
6. Two integers are selected at random from integers 1 to 11. If the sum is even, find the
probability that both the numbers are odd.
7. The chances of solving a problem in statistics for three students A, B and C are respectively
½, ¾ and ¼. If all of them try independently. Find the probability that the problem be
solved.
8. From a city population, the probability of selecting a male or a smoker is 7 /10, a male
smoker is 2/5 and a male, if a smoker is already selected is 2/3. Find the probability of
selecting 9i) a non – smoker (ii) a male and (iii) a smoker, if a male is first selected.
9. The content of three urns I, II, III are as follows
Balls Blue Black Red
Urns
I 4 3 5
II 3 5 7
III 5 2 4
An urn is selected at random and from it two balls are drawn at random. The two balls are
one Black and one Red. What is the probability that they come from urn I, II, III?
10. In a bolt factory machines A, B and C manufactures respectively 25%, 35% and 40% of total
output. Also out of these output of A, B, C 4%, 4% and 5% respectively are defective. A bolt
is drawn random from the total output and it is found to be defective, what is the
probability that it was manufactures by the machine A?
