Tutorial Sheet – 4 MES-211: Engineering Mathematics – III Branch: Mechanical Engineering Date: 30/31-08-2018 1. Two groups are competing for the positions on the Board of Directors of a corporation. The probabilities that the first and second groups will win are 0.6 and 0.4 respectively. Furthermore, if the first group wins the probability of introducing a new product is 0.8 and the corresponding probability if the second group wins is 0.3. What is the probability that the new product will be introduced? 2. A bag contains 5 white and 8 red balls. Two successive drawings of 3 balls are made such that (a) the balls are replaced before the second drawing, and (b) the balls are not replaced before the second draw. Find the probability that the first drawing will give 3 white and the second 3 red balls in each case. 3. A telephone switching center survey indicates that one of four calls is a business call, that one-tenth of business calls are long distance, and one-twentieth of non-business calls are long distance. What is the probability that (a) The next call will be a non-business long distance call (b) The next call will be business call given that it is long distance call (c) The next call will be a non-business call given that the previous call was long distance 4. There are two bags A and B. A contains n white and 2 black balls and B contains 2 white and n black balls. One of the two bags is selected at random and two balls are drawn from it without replacement. If both balls drawn are white and the probability that the bag A was used to draw the balls is 6/7, find the value of n. 5. An investment consultant predicts that the odds against the price of a certain stock will go up during the next week are 2:1 and the odds in favor of the price remaining the same are 1:3. What is the probability that the price of the stock will go down during the next week? 6. A student applies for a job in two firms X and Y. The probability of his being selected in firms X is 0.7 and being rejected at Y is 0.5. The probability of at least one of his applications being rejected is 0.6. What is the probability that he will be selected in one of the firms? 7. A box contains 50 diodes of which 10 are known to be bad. (i) A diode is selected at random, what is the probability that is bad. (ii) If the first diode drawn from the box was good, what is the probability that a second diode drawn will be good? (iii) If two diodes are drawn from the box, what is the probability that they are both good? 8. In a bolt factory machines A, B and C manufacture respectively 25%.35% and 40% of the total. Of their output 5, 4, 2 percent are defective bolts. A bolt is drawn at random/rom the product and is found to be defective. What is the probability that it was manufactured by machines A? 9. The content of urns I, II and III are as follows: 1 white, 2 black and 3 red balls, 2 white, 1 black and 1 red balls and 4 white, 5 black and 3 red balls. One urn is chosen at random and two balls drawn from it. They happen to be white and red. What is the probability that they come from urns I, II or III? 10. There are two identical urns containing four white and three red balls, respectively, and three white and seven red balls. An urn is chosen at random and a ball is drawn from it. If the ball drawn is white, what is the probability that it is from the first urn? 11. An urn contains 5 white and 5 black balls, 4 balls are drawn from this urn and put into another urn. From this second urn a ball is drawn and is found to be white. What is the probability of drawing a white ball again at the next draw.( The first white ball drawn is not replaced) 12. Three machines E1, E2, and E3 in a certain factory produce 50%, 25% and 25%, respectively, of the total daily output of electric tubes. It is known that 4% of the tubes produced one each of machines E1 and E2 are defective, and that 5% of those produced on E3 are defective. If one tube is picked up at random from a day’s production calculate the probability that it is defective. 13. Suppose a coin, weighted so that P (H) =2/3 and P (T) =1/3, is tossed. If head appears, then the number is selected at random from numbers 1 through 9; if tail appears, then a number is selected from the numbers 1 through 5. What is the probability that an even number is appearing. 14. A bag contains (n+1) coins. It is known that one of these coins shows heads on both sides, whereas the other coins are fair. Once coin is selected at random and tossed. If the probability that toss results in heads is 7/12 then find the value of n.
