Experiment No. 2: To Draw The Valve Timing Diagram of Matchless Diesel Engine

The objective of the experiment was to draw the valve timing diagram of a Matchless diesel engine. The apparatus included the engine, tachometer, dynamometer, stopwatch, weights and hangers. Key specifications of the Matchless engine are provided. The procedure outlines marking the valve opening and closing positions on the flywheel and measuring the arc lengths and flywheel radius. Observations of the arc lengths for inlet valve open, inlet valve close, exhaust valve open, exhaust valve close would then be used to calculate the corresponding crank angles in degrees.

Experiment no. 2

OBJECTIVE:

TO DRAW THE VALVE TIMING DIAGRAM OF MATCHLESS DIESEL ENGINE

APPARATUS:

 Matchless diesel engine

 Tachometer
 Frictional Dynamometer
 Stop watch
 Weights and hangers
 Fuels etc.

MATCHLESS DIESEL ENGINE:

 No. of strokes = 02
 No. of cylinders = 01
 Engine Configuration = Horizontal type
 Maximum BHP = 16 to 18 hp
 Maximum Speed = 350 to 400 rpm
 Equipped with Frictional Dynamometer

PROCEDURE:

 First, mark the positions of the engine valves openings and closing on the flywheel i.e. at which
degree angle of rotation of the flywheel engine inlet and outlet valves open and close. Measure the arc
length of the valve openings and closing of the inlet and outlet valves. Also measure the radius of the
flywheel using meter tape.
 In this way we are able to locate the following positions:
 Inlet valve open
 Inlet valve close
 Exhaust valve open
 Exhaust valve close

OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS:

OBSERVATIONS:

 Circumference of flywheel = 480 cm

CALCULATIONS:
No. of obs. Position of valves Arc length S Crank angle 0 Angle 0
- - cm radians degrees
01 IVO-IDC
02 ODC-IVC
03 EVO-ODC
II

04 IDC-EVC
Where,

Circumference of flywheel =480 cm

Since,

C = 2 x pi x r = 480

Therefore,

Radius of flywheel, r = 480/2 x pi = 76.40 cm

FOR SECTOR:

S=rx0

INLET VALVE OPENS:

Arc Length =S1 = …………….cm

Using the above formula:

Crank Angle = 01 = S1/r = ………………. radians

Similarly, we can find 02,03 and 04.
