Asca Lesson Plan Guidance 1

The guidance lesson plan aims to teach 5th grade students the problem-solving steps to help them resolve issues respectfully and independently. The counselor will review calming techniques, show an introductory video, and present the problem-solving poster. Students will work in groups to develop typical problems they face and present them to the class. Together, the class will restate the problems without blame so the students learn to properly define problems. In the next class, the counselor will continue reviewing expressing problems respectfully and working through the remaining problem-solving steps.

develop appropriate social skills and work through problems independently or
with others.

addressed:
B-SS 2. Create positive and supportive relationships with other students
B-SS 8. Demonstrate advocacy skills and ability to assert self, when necessary
B-SS 9. Demonstrate social maturity and behaviors appropriate to the
situation and environment
B-SS 1. Use effective oral and written communication skills and listening skills
Learning Objective(s):
1. Recall the S: Say the problem step of the Problem-Solving Steps
2. State a problem without blaming anyone
Materials: Computer with projection screen, White board and markers, How to
Calm Down poster, Problem-Solving Steps poster
Procedure:
1. Review Calm-Down Steps
2. Introduce Topic with online video
3. Discuss the video: 1) What steps did they take? 2) What was the problem,
3) How did they state the problem? 4) How do we make proper problem
statements, 5) Discuss not using blame,
4. Present Problem-Solving Steps Poster
5. Put students in groups to develop a typical problem with other people that
they encounter
6. Students present their problems
7. As a class, we go through ways to say the problem without assigning blame
to anyone.
Process Data: Using school data
Follow up: Next class, we will review that “Saying the problem without blame”
and continue working though the problem-solving steps. (If the problems
were well-thought out, save for next time.)
