Chapter 1
Introduction of Satellite Communication
In Satellite communication, signal transferring between the sender and
receiver is done with the help of satellite. In this process, the signal
which is basically a beam of modulated microwaves is sent towards the
satellite. Then the satellite amplifies the signal and sent it back to the
receiver’s antenna present on the earth’s surface. So, all the signal
transferring is happening in space. Thus this type of communication is
also known as space communication.

The conventional way to call the process of transmitting the modulated

signal from HUB teleport to Satellite is the “Uplink” whereas from the
satellite down to a remote station is “Downlink”.

Satellite Communication Basic

1. Satellite act as a repeater placed in space.

2. Satellite have communication payloads known as Transponders.
These Transponder operates in fixed frequency band(C, Ku, Ka
band) and with fixed polarization i.e. Vertical or Horizontal.
3. Satellite is located in fix slot (allocated by ITU) in Geostationary
orbit, which is 36000KM above the Equator of the Earth.
4. Satellite Received the Signal (uplink frequency band)from
Transponder Earth Station, convert signal into down link
frequency band, amplified and transmit back to the Earth.

`Satellite communication Frequency

 Frequency Band
 L1-2 GHz
 S 2-4 GHz
 C 4-8 GHz Down Link 3.7 to 4.2 Up Link 5.925-6.425
 X 8-12 GHz
 Ku 12-18 GHz Down Link 11.7-12.2 Up Link 14-14.5
 Ka 27-40 GHz

Satellite Location

Earth Orbits for Satellite Communication Services

 Orbit Definition Altitude Range (km) Period (Hours) (above surface

of the earth), Orbital speed(Km/s).
 LEO 150 to 1000 KM, 1.5 to 1.8 Hrs, 7.13Km/s
 MEO 5000 to 10000 KM, 3.5 to 6 Hrs, 4.89Km/s
 Geosynchronous 36000 KM, 24 Hrs, 3.07Km/s. Geostationary
Satellite: Precisely 35,786Km in the plane of the equator. Mean
earth radius is 6378.137Km & GEO radius from the center of earth
is 42164.17Km.

Frequency Translation

Advantages of Satellite Communication

1. The satellite communication is very helpful for the people staying

in remote areas
2. The satellite communication services are very much helpful during
the time of natural disasters as the wired services have large
chances of falling.
3. Satellite communication services include the services like voice
calling, video calling, radio, television channels, internet, fax, etc
4. Satellite communication services being so portable are very easy
to install and user-friendly as well.
5. Satellite also used for broadcasting purpose.

Disadvantages of Satellite Communication

1. Signal delay: Because the satellite is 36000Km from the earth

there is an appreciable delay.
2. Cost: Satellites are large and expensive, thus there is a large
capital cost in building and launching a satellite.
3. Impossibility to repair and maintain.
