RCD 2 - Two Way Slab

A two-way slab is a slab supported by beams on all four sides that carries loads in both directions. For a slab to be considered two-way, the ratio of its longer span to shorter span must be less than 2. Main reinforcement is provided in both directions of a two-way slab to carry loads in both directions. The document provides equations to calculate the minimum width of support (B) for two-way slabs based on the slab thickness and span lengths.

TWO-WAY SLAB

ENGR. MICHAEL L. NULLAS

Two way slab is a slab supported by beams on all the four sides and the
loads are carried by the supports along both directions, it is known as two
way slab. In two way slab, the ratio of longer span (l) to shorter span (s) is
less than 2.

In two way slabs, load will be carried in both the directions. So, main
reinforcement is provided in both direction for two way slabs.

A two-way slab (A1) with interior
beam is shown in floor plan with
a slab thickness of 175mm.

Assume both beams and slab
has the same value of modulus
of elasticity (E). All columns has
a dimension of 300m x 300mm
and the total height of T-beam is

thickness of slab for an
interior panel as per NSCP
specs.
