Slab S: Effective Span in Short Duration

1. The document analyzes the design of a two-way slab with discontinuous edges and provides dimensions, material properties, and loading. 2. It calculates the moments and shear at various sections and determines the required reinforcement for positive and negative moments. 3. The minimum reinforcement and spacing of reinforcement bars are checked. Development length and shear capacity are also verified. Torsional reinforcement is designed at the supports.

Two adjacent edge in discontinuous

Let us assume 0.25% of steel
Modular factor = 1.51
L/d = 20 X 1.51 or d = 4.5/(20 x 1.51) = 130
Using 8  rod, D = 130 + 20 + 4 = 154
Say D = 155
So, d = 155 – 24 = 131 mm.
Effective span in short duration
1. c/c distance = 4500
2. clear distance + effective depth = 4500 -250 + 131 = 4381
so effective span = 4.381 m
Loading
Self-weight of slab/m length = 0.155 X 1 X 25 = 3.875 kN/m
Finish load = 0.04 X 1 X 24 = 0.960 kN/m
Live load = 2.000 kN/m
Load of partition wall = 1.5000 kN/m
Total = 8.335 kN/m
Factor load = 1.5 X 8.335 = 12.750 kN/m
Ly/Lx = 5/4.5 = 1.11
Positive moment co-efficient at mid span
ax= 0.040 + (0.009 X0.001/0.1) = 0.041
ay = 0.035
Negative moment co-efficient at continuous edge
ax= 0.053 + (0.007 X0.001/0.1) = 0.054
ay = 0.047
Positive moment at mid span
Mux = 0.041 X 12.75 X 4.381^2 = 10.033 kNm
Muy = 0.038 X 12.5 X 4.381^2 = 8.565 kNm
Negative moment
at continuous edge of short span
Mux1 = 0.054 X 12.75 X 4.381^2 = 13.214 kNm
at continuous edge of long span
Muy1 = 0.047 X 12.75 X 4.381^2 = 11.502kNm
√13.214 ×106
Effective depth = = 69.18 mm which less than 131 mm
2.761 ×1000

d for short span = 155 – 20 – 4 = 131 mm

d for long span = 155 – 20 – 8 – 4 = 123 mm
Since provide ‘d’ is more than calculate
We have an under reinforce section.
Reinforce along short span for positive moment
0.5 ×𝑓ck 4.6×10.033×106
Ast = [1 − √(1 − )]𝑏𝑑
fy 𝑓𝑐𝑘×𝑏×𝑑2

= 221 mm2 ( fck = 20, fy = 415, b =1000, d = 131)

Minimum reinforcement = 0.12% of bd = .12 X 1000 X 155 / 100 = 186 mm2 which less than
221 mm2
So, spacing of 8 bar = 1000 X 50.3 / 221 = 227.6 mm say 220 mm
Positive reinforcement along long span
0.5×20 4.6×8.565×106
Ast = [ 1 − √(1 − 20×1000×1232)] × 1000 × 123 = 207.5 mm2
415

Spacing of 8 rod = 1000 X 50.3/207.5 = 242 mm say 220 mm.

-ve moment at continuous edge of short span
0.5×20 4.6×13.214×106
Ast = [ 1 − √(1 − )] × 1000 × 131 = 294 mm2
415 20×1000×1312

Spacing of 8 rod = 1000 X 50.3/294 = 171 mm say 170 mm.

-ve moment at continuous edge of long span
0.5×20 4.6×11.502×106
Ast = [ 1 − √(1 − )] × 1000 × 123 = 273 mm2
415 20×1000×1232

Spacing of 8 rod = 1000 X 50.3/273 = 184 mm say 180 mm.

Check for shear & development length in short span
𝑟 1.1
S.F at long edge = 𝑊𝑢 × 𝑙𝑥 × 2+𝑟 = 12.75 × 1000 × 4.38 × 2+1.1 = 19.820 𝑘𝑁/𝑚
19.82×1000
Nominal shear stress at long edge = = 0.151 𝑁/𝑚𝑚2
1000×131
19.82×50.3
Ast at support of short span = = 114.3 𝑚𝑚2
400

100 × 𝐴𝑠𝑡 100 × 114.3

𝑆𝑜, = = 0.087%
𝑏×𝑑 1000 × 131
c = 0.28N/m2 which is more than v. So safe.
𝑀𝑢1
+ 𝐿𝑜 ≥ 𝐿𝑑
𝑉𝑢
𝐴𝑠𝑡×𝑓𝑦
Moment of resistance at the section is Mu1 = 0.87𝑓𝑦 × 𝐴𝑠𝑡 × 𝑑 (1 − 𝑏×𝑑×𝑓𝑐𝑘)
114.3×415
= 0.87 × 415 × 114.3 × 131 (1 − 1000×131×20)

= 5.309 X 106 Nmm

8 .87×415×8
Ld = 0.87 × 415 × 4𝑏𝑑 = = 376 [ bd = 1.6 X 1.2 = 1.92]
4×1.92
𝑙𝑠 250
Providing = 𝐿𝑜 = − 25 = − 25 = 100 𝑚𝑚
2 2

So, Vu = 19.82 kN = 19820 N

𝑀𝑢1 5309×103
So, + 𝑙𝑜 = + 100 = 368 𝑚𝑚, 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑠𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑙𝑦 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠
𝑉𝑢 19820

So provide a of 75 mm at the end.
