There is no such word “new aircraft” in aviation, rather the word “airworthy aircraft” is an
acceptable word on describing an aircraft. Airworthy means an aircraft meeting the established
standards for safe flight, equipped and maintained in condition to fly.
SkyRunner SR-97 is an example of airworthy aircraft. During the design process, It passed all the
standards, and the rules on designing was applied as well as to make it efficient. All the numbers
and components are applicable on the aircraft.
The main goal is to build a light aircraft with the purpose for training and for recreational. In
Report No. 3: Airfoil Selection, NACA 23012 for the wings and NACA 0012 for the stabilizers.
Both have a reasonable lift, drag and thickness characteristics, will be discuss further in Report
No. 3. It has a gross weight of 750.15 kg and it was properly positioned the center of gravity. In
terms of aerodynamics, the wing and tail area and angle of incidence were adjusted to have an
ideal lift distribution. Making a flight envelope is for safety purposes, able for the pilots to know
the limits and never exceed speed of the aircraft. And the reader may agree of this
performances, that the engine Rotax 914 is suitable to the aircraft that is efficient and
economic; less operation cost yet high performance. Lastly, the stability of the aircraft with
respect to its CG is also properly adjusted to have a smooth control over flight.
All of the computations, drawings, technical aspects and modifications are included in this book.
Preface
In today’s generation, aviation industry is getting bigger and more competitive between the
airlines and manufacturers. The demand for aeronautical engineers is also rising but with a high
standard and competitive qualifications. Engineer’s job is to make sure the efficiency and safety
of their design. That’s why a comprehensive study is needed before entering any engineering
firms.
Engr. Carl Marvin F. Red for his criticism and guidance in preparing this work. Many thanks to
him for all the patience in correcting my reports and all the knowledge he shared about Aircraft
Design.
To my BSAE-5 classmates for sharing their time in imparting their knowledge and helping me to
finish my reports.
To my family and friends for the moral and financial support and for all the prayers, love and
sacrifices for the success of this study.
And above all, to God Almighty for giving me strength, healthy body, patience, knowledge and
understanding for the very start up until the end and for making all of these possible and
success. To God be the glory!
