APPLIED PHYSICS-1 (ETPH-103)
Question 1 (a) If unpolarized light falls on a system of two crossed polarized sheets, no light is transmitted. If a third polarizing sheet is placed between them, what will be the output, explain. (b) What is the refractive index of the cladding if the numerical aperture of an optical fibre is 0.5 and the core refractive index is 1.54? (c) Distinguish between the diffraction fringes due to a single slit of the width e and the interference fringes produced with two narrow slits of separation e. (d) When seen by reflected light, explain why an excessively thin film appears to be perfectly black and why a thick film appears white? Question 2 (a) What are Newton’s ring and how are they formed? Prove that in reflected light (i) Diameter of the dark rings is proportional to the square root of the natural numbers (ii) Diameter of the bright rings is proportional to the square root of odd numbe (b) Draw a neat well labeled diagram indicating the path of the rays for a wedge shaped thin film for interference by reflected light. Question 3 (a) Derive the expression for Fraunhofer diffraction from N slits and discuss in detail the formation of the principal maximum and its dependence on the number of slits (N). (b) How many orders will be visible if the wavelength of the incident radiation is 5000 Ao and the number of lines on the grating is 2620 in one inch. (c) In a Fraunhofer diffraction experiment using two slits, the third, sixth and ninth interference maxima are are found to be missing. If the slit width is 0.05×10-3m, calculate the inter-slit separation. Question 4 (a) Explain in detail the geometry of calcite crystal. Explain with proper ray diagrams. How the Nicol prism is used both as polarizer and analyzer. (b) State Brewster’s law. Question 5 (a) Explain the difference between the step index fibre and graded index fibre. (b) A fiber cable has an acceptance angle of 30o and a core index of refraction of 1.4. Calculate the refractive index of the cladding. Question 6: (a) Give difference with examples between interference due to division of amplitude and wave front. (b) Can non-coherent sources produce interference? Justify your answer. (c) What is population inversion? Mention the ways to achieve it. (d) What is the role of the core in an optical fiber? (e) In a diffraction grating how are spectral lines affected when ruling are made closer? (f) Define and explain numerical aperture for an optical fiber. Can light propagate through an optical fiber at an angle of incidence greater than the acceptance angle? Question 7: (a) What are the main components of LASER? Explain. (b) Why two level LASER is not possible?
