Assignment 3 SEM12022-2023

The document outlines an assignment for Applied Physics-I, covering topics such as the Michelson Interferometer, thin film interference, Newton's rings, diffraction, and polarization. It includes questions requiring descriptions, derivations, calculations, and diagrams related to these concepts. The assignment aims to assess students' understanding of fundamental principles in optics and their applications.

ASSIGNMENT-3

Applied Physics-I (BS-105)

(2022-2023)

Q1. (a) Describe the Michelson Interferometer arrangement and state if the interference is due
to division of amplitude or division of wavefront. If the mirrors are exactly perpendicular to
each other, what is category of fringes formed?
(b) In a Michelson Interferometer 100 fringes cross the field of view when the movable mirror
is displaced by 0.022948 mm. Calculate the wavelength of monochromatic light.

Q2. (a) Illustrate with neat scientific, well labelled diagram the necessity of an extended source
to observe fringes in a thin film.
(b) Light of wavelength 624nm is incident perpendicularly on a soap film (µ=1.33) suspended
in air. What are the smallest two thicknesses of the film for which reflections from the film
undergo fully interference?
(c) Derive the relation for path difference and subsequently the width of a single band for a
wedge shaped film.

Q3. (a)Why two independent sources of light cannot produce interference fringes?
(b) What will happen to interference pattern in biprism, if
(i) angle of biprism is increased
(ii) width of slit is increased continuously?
(c) In Newton’s ring experiment, the diameters of the 4th and 12th bright fringes are 0.4 cm
and 0.7 cm, respectively. Deduce the diameter of 20th bright ring.
(d) On introducing a thin sheet of mica (thickness 12 ×10–5 cm) in the path of one of the
interfering beams in a biprism arrangement, the central fringe is shifted through a distance
equal to the spacing between successive bright fringes. Calculate the refractive index of mica.

Q4. (a) Differentiate Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction. Show that the intensities of the
4 4 4
maximum in the diffraction due to a single slit are in the ratio 1: 9 п2: 25 п2 : 49 п2 ….
(b) For the Fraunhofer diffraction due to a double slit, what is the effect of (i) increasing the
slit width, (ii) increasing the slit separation, and (iii) increasing the wavelength of light?
(c) A plane transmission grating has 15000 lines per inch. What is the highest order of the
o
spectra which can be observed for wavelength 6000 A . If opaque spaces are exactly two times
the transparent spaces, which order of spectra will be absent?

Q5. (a)Describe Rayleigh’s Criterion of resolution? Derive an expression for resolving power
of a transmission grating.
o o
(b) Find the angular separation between the two sodium lines 5890 A and 5896 A in the
second order spectrum of a grating with 5000 lines/cm. The width of the grating is ½ cm. Can
they be seen distinctly?
Q6. (a)What do you understand by double refraction? Describe a Nicol prism and explain
how it acts as a polarizer and analyzer.
(b) For sodium light of wavelength 5893Å, calculate thickness of quarter wave plate. Given
ne = 1.553 and no = 1.544.

Q 7. Define specific rotation. Describe the construction and working of a Laurent’s half shade
polarimeter, explaining fully the action of the half shade device
