Finding Equation of Quadratic Function

This document provides an activity and examples for students to learn about finding the equation of a quadratic function using different methods: factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. It gives three examples finding the zeros of quadratic functions using each method. It then asks students to find the equation of a quadratic function given specific information like the zeros or the graph. The document aims to teach students how to represent a quadratic function using an equation given real-world scenarios involving the graph or numeric values related to the function.

Objective: To be able to find the equation of the quadratic function

Activity: Give Me My Roots! x2 – x – 6 = 0

Factoring Completing the Square Quadratic Formula

Score:__________

1. How do you describe the graph? ___________________________

2. What’s the vertex of the parabola? __________________________
3. At what values of x does the graph intersects the x-axis?
___________________________
4. What is the value of y when x=-1? _______
5. How about the value of y when x = 3? _______

Example 1: Find the zeros of the quadratic function y= x2 – 3x + 2 by factoring method.

Example 2: Find the zeros of the quadratic function y= x2 + 4x – 2 using completing the square method.

Example 3: Find the zeros of the quadratic function f(x) = y= x2 + x -12 using the quadratic formula.
Now, since you know that the roots of the quadratic function are also the zeros of the function, let’s try to find equation
using the roots or zeros of the function.

1. Find a quadratic function whose zeros are -1 and 4.

Root 1: x = -1 Root 2: x = 4

It follows that x = -1 is x+ 1 = 0 and x = 4 is x – 4 = 0,then

(x + 1) (x – 4) = 0 Multiplying binomials will give the quadratic function x2 – 3x – 4 = 0

2. Find the quadratic function by graph.

Step 1: Find the vertex. ______________

Step 2: Find the Zeros or x-intercepts. _________, __________
Step 3: Use any of the zeros of the function and the vertex and
substitute the value to the vertex form.
y = a(x – h)2 + k x = ___ k = _____ x = ____ y = ______
0 = a (5 – 2) 2 + (-3)
0 = a (3) 2 - 3
0 = a(9) – 3
0 = 9a – 3
3 = 9a
a = 1/3 Equation: ________________________________

3. Find an equation of a quadratic function with zeros 3 ± √2 .

Solution: x = 3 ± √2 .

9x2 - 18x + 7 = 0 Why?__________________________________

Equation: _____________________________________

On a one whole sheet of pad paper, solve for the following and give what is asked. Show your solutions.

1. What are the zeros of the function f(x) = x2 + 6x + 9.

2. What are the zeros of the function f(x) = x2 - 4x - 21.
3. The vertex of the parabola is (-3,5) and it is the minimum point of the graph. If the graph passes through the
point (-2,7), what is the equation of the quadratic function?
4. Find the equation of the function given the roots of 3 and 2.
5. Find the equation of the function whose graph is shown below.
