Finding Equation of A Quadratratic Function Given Zeros

This document outlines a detailed lesson plan for a Mathematics 9 class focused on quadratic equations, inequalities, and functions. The lesson aims to help students determine quadratic functions from given zeros, relate parabolas to real-life situations, and engage in activities that reinforce their understanding. The instructional procedure includes a review of previous lessons, group activities, and problem-solving exercises, culminating in an evaluation and assignment for further study.

Review:
Class, what was our previous lesson all
about? It is about finding the quadratic equation
given the vertex and any point.

That’s right. So what are the steps in

finding the quadratic equation given the
vertex and a point? First, we need to solve for the value of a
using the vertex form: f(x) =a(x−h)2+k,
by substituting the coordinates of the
vertex and the given point.
Then, we will use the value of a to get
the equation of the quadratic function,
f(x) =ax 2+bx+c.

A. Activity
Before we proceed to our
next lesson, let us have an activity.
This activity is called quadratic
functions gallery.
I will group you into four.
As you can see, I have posted four
sets of functions around the room.
Those functions are grouped by
color. We have green functions,
blue functions, purple functions
and orange functions. Each group
will be assigned in one colored set
of functions. I will give each group
a copy of a graphing template. You
are going to use a table of values
to plot the points for each function.
I have here a box containing four
cards that are colored in green,
blue, purple, and orange. The
leader of each group will have to
pick one card and the color of the
card that you will pick will be the
set of functions your group will be
assigned to. Do you have any
questions regarding the None, sir.
instructions given?

Okay, I will give you 5 minutes,

you may start now.

“Green Functions”
A. 𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙
B.𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐−𝟐𝒙 – 𝟖
“Blue Functions”
A.𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟔𝒙 – 𝟏𝟔
B.𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐−𝟏𝟏𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐

“Purple Functions”

A.𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙 + 𝟑𝟐 – 𝟏𝟎
B. 𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐–𝟏𝟓

“Orange F

unctions”

A.𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟖𝒙 + 𝟏𝟔
B.𝒇𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟖𝒙 + 𝟐𝟎

Okay class, are you done?

Yes, sir.

Paste your works on the board.

B. Analysis
Class, how was your activity?
It was challenging sir, but very
interesting.

So what have you noticed on the

figures that the graph of each
function formed?
They are all parabolas, sir
Yes, they are parabolas; therefore,
they are what kind of functions?
Quadratic functions.
Very good, all of these functions
are quadratic. So what did you do
to find the graph of each function?
Sir, we used the table of values to plot
Yes, so in your activity, what are them on the graph.
the given?
The given are the equations and the
table of functions, sir.
And what do you have to find?
The graph, sir.
That’s right. Now, for our new
lesson, what we are going to find
is the equations, and the given are
zeros of the quadratic function.

The zeros of a quadratic equation

are the points in the graph where
the curve intersects the x-axis.
This means that in these points of
intersection between the graph
and the x-axis, the value of the
function is zero.

Let us consider this example:

In this figure, what points are the

zeros of the quadratic function?

Why do you say so? (-4,0) and (3,0), sir

Because they are the points where the

Yes, very good. The x coordinates curve intersects the x-axis.
of these points are also known as
the roots of quadratic functions. In
these two points, what are the
roots?

Yes. That’s right. Now, we will -4 and 3, sir

consider -4 and 3 as r 1 andr 2 . And
then we need to express the
equation in the form of
(x-r 1)(x-r 2)=0. Therefore, what will
be our equation now?

Yes. And then, what will we do (x+4)(x-3)=0

next?

We have to simplify the equation to

Yes, you’re right, Simplifying, what derive the standard form.

do we get now?

Therefore, what is our quadratic Sir, we now have x 2+x-12

equation?

2
Very good. Let us have another x +x-12
example.

(The teacher will show more

examples about finding quadratic
equations given the zeros.)

C. Abstraction
So class, again, what are the
zeros of a quadratic equation?

The zeros of a quadratic equation are

So where is the point of the points in the graph where the curve
intersection located? intersects the x-axis.

Therefore, what is the value of the between the graph and the x-axis
function?

If the given are the zeros or the The value of the function is zero.
roots of the function, what do we
have to do in order to find its
equation?

First, we need to express the equation

in the form of (x-r 1)(x-r 2)=0

Then, we will substitute the roots to r 1

andr 2 in order to complete the required
equation.

D. Application Lastly, we will simplify the equation to

given the zeros of the functions.
Let us solve this problem.

The mighty King Wallace sits on

his throne and rules his kingdom
every day of the year, except for
his birthday. Every year, to
celebrate his birthday he takes a
trip to visit various scenic outlooks
and famous locations within his
kingdom. For this year’s birthday
celebration, the decision is difficult,
there're so many destinations to
choose from. But finally, he
decides he wants to visit a place
he’s never been to before. He'll go
to a village near the border of his
kingdom. He’s been curious about
this village because he heard they
have some unusual customs.
When the King gets to the village,
the villagers seem normal enough.
The villagers stand with baskets of
apples patiently waiting for his
speech to begin. Luckily for the
king, his squire knows all about the
village's unusual customs, the
villagers always give an
enthusiastic welcome to visitors.
By throwing apples at them! To
keep the king safe, the squire will
have to control the crowd. But how
do you think they will do that?

I think they have to put the king on a

tower 5 yards high, at the point on
the graph (0, 5). Now, we need to
know where the crowd needs to
stand to so they won't be able to
hit the king with apples. We
already have here the coefficients
of some points of the function.
Now what do we need to do next?

We need to plot those points. And then

connect them in order to form the

points. Let us start plotting them.

After drawing in the connected (Students will plot the given points one

formed?
It is a parabola, sir.
Yes. Now the possible spot where
the king won’t be reached by the
apples is the part of the function
where the graph touches the x-
axis, in other word, the zeros of
the functions. In this figure, what
are the zeros of the function?
10 and -2, sir.
Therefore, how far should the
people be, in order for the king to
be safe?
Yes, very good. But theres still

something missing on that
function. What do you think is it?

We still need to find the equation.

Yes. Can you solve for the missing
equation?

Yes, sir.
r 1 = 10
r 2. = -2
(x-r 1)(x-r 2 )=0
(x-10)(x+2)=0
2
x +2x-10x-20=0
2
x -8x-10=0
Excellent, class. You have
definitely mastered our today’s f(x)= x 2-8x-10
lesson.

Upon hearing the king’s situation,

how can you describe the king?

The king is respectful because he

must go down. We all need to be
humble always. No matter how
high your achievements have
been, we should always keep our
feet on the ground. Because just
like the parabola, no matter how
high its points have reached, it
always goes down. And of course
we need to respect each other
because that is the key to unity
and peace.
