87. How has the influence of the online world (the Internet, networks, bulletin board systems, and e-mail)
affected the world of viruses?

Ans: Since November 1987 when the Internet Worm created by Robert T. Morris, Jr. wreaked over $100
million worth of problems on computers connected to the Internet, it has been obvious that having
computers connected on a computer network increased the possibility of virus infections. That is not to
say that networks are bad, in fact networks are becoming more and more essential and valuable all the
time. It's just that being online on a network, a BBS, or dialed into a remote computer increases the
possibility of contact with viruses.

88. Will you get in trouble if you report a virus?

Ans: No. It is expected that all computer users will recognize the seriousness of a virus attack and call
your company Help Desk or an experienced person immediately.

89. What can viruses and other destructive software do to your system?

Ans: Best case, a virus may turn out to be a nuisance, such as playing a song repeatedly at random
times. In the worst case, a virus can rapidly spread through a system or a group of systems on a
computer network, rapidly destroying programs and data. The biggest problems with viruses are that they
can spread and do their work silently, quickly, and efficiently, before you ever discover that they are
there.

90. How many viruses are there?

Ans: At last count, there are over 11,000 viruses, and the list grows at about at least 50 new viruses per
month. As you would guess this certainly is enough to keep the anti-virus software producers in business.

91. How do you prevent viruses?

Ans: Prevention of virus attacks requires a conscious effort in the area of "safe-computing". Safe
computing means

1) Be careful about the data and programs you put into your system.

2) don't ever operate bootleg (illegal copies) of software on your system

3) you don't leave disks lying in the open where someone may place a virus on it without your knowledge

4) use a virus attack prevention program, such as McAfee's VSHIELD or Symantec Norton Anti-Virus

92. How do you know if you have a virus?

Ans: Systems which are affected with viruses act erratically. Sometimes the virus will identify itself with a
message giving its name on the screen of your computer monitor. In extreme cases, enough data and/or
programs may have been destroyed to prevent your computer from successfully booting.

93. How do you stop a virus once you discover you have one?

Ans: Call the Help Desk or a qualified technical person immediately. Since viruses can constitute a
serious threat to a data intensive organization such as a law firm, it is absolutely imperative that virus
outbreaks are quickly isolated, identified, and treated so it prevents their continued spread. Your
contacting the Help Desk to get experienced people dispatched on the problem is the best way to check
a virus attack.

11
116. What is Spoofing

Ans: Altering a genuine email so that it now appears to come from somewhere else, such as from your
bank and giving spurious instructions which, if followed, will imperil the security of your data.

117. What is Spyware

Ans: This is ―malware‖ programmed to sit unnoticed on a computer and send back data surreptitiously to
the hacker.

118. What is Trojan Horse

Ans: Malware disguised as a ―benign‖ and useful piece of software, but instead installs a ―back door‖ in
your computer which then allows a hacker unlimited access to your machine.
Virus

Self-replicating ―malware‖ that injects copies of itself onto your computer. It can then cause catastrophic
damage such as destroying a hard drive but can also steal information and log keystrokes.

119. What is Whaling

Ans: Phishing that targets the senior echelons of management of an organisation by a hacker in pursuit
of financial gain or greater exposure for a political cause. Whaling could be used to collect sensitive or
deeply embarrassing information about an individual e.g. salary, bonuses, private address, email and
telephone numbers.

120. What is White hat

Ans: A hacker who uses their skills for social good, or helps organisations by exposing vulnerabilities in
their IT systems. This is the opposite of a black hat.

CENTRAL & STATE GOVERNMENT APPS
(DIGITAL INDIA DREAM)

1. OnlineRTI – File RTI Online

If you have wanted to use the Right to Information Act (RTI) initiative but were hesitant thinking
about having to go through a tedious process, this app is all you need. Using this Android app, you
can let the team behind the app know what you want to file the RTI about. Their lawyers and
experts will frame the application and send a draft back to you for revision or approval. You can
then modify it if needed or submit it the way it is. As mandated by law, the response from the
authorities for your application will reach you within a month.

The app also enables users to form communities and forums to share queries. All information about
state and central government rules for RTI applications can be accessed on the catalogues available.
Users can connect with famous RTI activists, track application status, etc. The purpose behind
creating this app is embodied in this RTI tweet: “If citizens want a better future and governance
they will have to take the responsibility for spreading the usage and spirit of the #RTI.”

2. MyGov – Access Government Initiatives

MyGov is Government of India’s innovative citizen engagement platform for direct citizen
participation in governance. It provides an avenue for channelizing the ideas, comments and
creative suggestions of the citizens by connecting them to central ministries and associated
organizations. Citizens can participate in policy formulation and programme implementation to
usher in an era of direct participatory democracy.

After creating a login id on this feature-rich app, a citizen can easily access numerous government
initiative sites, including Swachh Bharat, Open Government Data Platform, My Gov Task
Management, and My Gov Newsletter. Under the ambit of the MyGov app, citizens from various
corners of the country also get the opportunity to interact with the Prime Minister through the
MyGov Townhall, a first of its kind initiative.

100
3. MEAIndia – Know Everything About Indian Missions Abroad
The MEAIndia app description says that the app is a “single window source of all information
related to the ministry’s citizen centric services and outreach activities.” The user-friendly app has
an interactive format with impressive graphics that provide information about the ministry’s many
activities and citizen-oriented services – E-Citizen, Passport services, Follow PM/EAM, VisaServices,
and Indian missions abroad are some examples. It also simplifies the steps involved in travelling
abroad for work or studies and helps people identify the agencies authorized to attest documents

The app helps users find out the nearest Indian missions or posts for emergency consular
assistance, if required, and also find out how to undertake the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and Haj
Pilgrimage. Users can also download and watch pictures and documentaries on India, share and
contribute their own pictures and suggestions, or even follow the prime minister on his visits
abroad.

4. Incredible India App – For Location Based Travel Needs

The Incredible India app assists international and domestic tourists in accessing information about
Tourism Ministry-recognized tourism service providers. These include approved inbound tour
operators, adventure tour operators, domestic tour operators, transport operators, travel agents,
regional level guides, and classified hotels available in cities and tourist centres. Contact details of
the regional directors of the Tourism Department, including their names, office addresses, contact
numbers and email addresses are also provided.

Requested details will be sent through this application to tourists on their mobile phones, based on
their current location. In addition, the application will provide information on places of interest and
tips on how to visit them. Colourful, easy-to-navigate and simple-to-use, the app brings all tourism
information to one place. Incredible India has also launched a personal audio tour guide,
AudioCompass, which contains thousands of audio clips narrated by expert local guides.

5. Narendra Modi App – Connect with the PM

The official app of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, this app is a one-stop destination for
knowing about all the latest day-to-day activities of the Prime Minister. It provides an exclusive and
unique opportunity to receive messages and emails directly from the Prime Minister. Not just this,
it allows users to contribute and earn badges through to-do tasks.

With the launch of this app, Narendra Modi became the first political leader who has his own
mobile app, and he uses this platform to share his ideas to all. One can tune in and listen to the
various ‘Mann ki Baat’ editions of the PM, read his blogs and know more about him in the biography
section.

6. GARV Grameen Vidyutikaran App – Transparency in Rural

Electrification
Grameen_Vidhutikaran
The Grameen Vidyutikaran app lets anyone track the progress of rural electrification in India
through a real-time dashboard. Launched by Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, the app is
available for Android users. The dashboard presents the total number of un-electrified villages,
101
details the status of the un-electrified villages and the work in progress – whether they’ve been
surveyed or if work has yet to start. A Milestones tab displays the percentage achieved against the
number of days left, while a progress bar shows the number of villages electrified on a weekly basis.

Reports by GVAs (Grameen Vidyut Abhiyantas or rural electrification engineers) are shared
through the GARV app with officials as well as the public, putting pressure on the State
governments for timely and quality delivery. In a move that will increase transparency, GVAs
directly capture the electrification data on the app with subsequent state government confirmation,
instead of the data first coming from state governments. With the GARV dashboard recently
becoming multilingual, citizens can also keep a tab on the mission in their native languages.

7. mPassport Seva App – Anytime Access to Passport Services

m-passport-seva
Those who are looking at getting a new passport can now do so right from their Android devices.
With a view to making public services mobile-enabled, the Ministry of External Affairs launched the

The lightweight and easy to use mPassport Seva app is also one of the largest projects of the
Government of India under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP).

Users can search for nearby Passport Seva Kendras (PSK) or District Passport Cells (DPC) in a
district and also search through pin codes. Users can search for police stations too. The app has a
fee calculator, which determines the fees to be paid along with the application. There is also the
option of tracking application status by providing the file number and date of birth. While people
cannot currently apply for a new passport using this app, it provides the detailed steps and the
documents required for issuing a new passport or renewing an existing one.

8. Khoya Paya App – Citizen-Centric Portal for Missing Children

khoyapaya1
The Khoya Paya app is a citizen-centric portal that addresses the issue of missing and vulnerable
children in India. Any citizen can register with the portal and provide information about a missing

SECTION-14
INTRODUCTION TO CORTANA & SIRI
Microsoft Cortana (AI)
Cortana is a voice-controlled virtual assistant for Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1.
Comparable to Siri, the intelligent assistant enabled on Apple devices, Microsoft's Cortana
will use the Bing search engine and data stored on the user's smartphone by to make
personalized recommendations.

Cortana Offers Personalized Recommendations

According to Microsoft, users will be able to launch Cortana from the start screen, where
the female virtual assistant will offer suggestion for tasks the owner might want to carry
out based on location and past behavior. Users can instruct Cortana to find information,
schedule appointments, set notifications or remainders and use features of applications
installed on the device.

Cortana is personalized, largely based on the amount of information the user shares. For
example, by allowing access to calendar, email, contacts and browsing history the virtual
assistant can use this data to try and anticipate the user's needs.

As reported on eWeek, Cortana's answers and suggestions get better as she grows more
familiar with the user, courtesy of Microsoft's search platform. Powered by Bing, Cortana
gets to know you, builds a relationship that you can trust, and gets better over time by
asking questions based on your behavior and checking in with you before she assumes
you're interested in something.

Who is Cortana?
The virtual assistant is named after the artificially intelligent (AI) system in Microsoft's
Halo video game. In Halo, this fictional AI character provides gamers with the the backstory
and tactical information needed to play. Jen Taylor is the voice actress of Halo's Cortana
and is also the voice of the digital assistant. According to Wikipedia, Cortana's original
design was based on the Egyptian queen Nefertiti.

Windows has changed drastically over the years, but somethings stay the same, through
the rough and the smooth.

Microsoft Windows has seen nine major versions since its first release in 1985.
Over 29 years later, Windows looks very different but somehow familiar with
elements that have survived the test of time, increases in computing power
and – most recently – a shift from the keyboard and mouse to the
touchscreen.

Here’s a brief look at the history of Windows, from its birth at the hands of Bill
Gates with Windows 1 to the latest arrival under new Microsoft chief executive
Satya Nadella.

Windows 1

The first version of Windows.

This is where it all started for Windows. The original Windows 1 was released
in November 1985 and was Microsoft’s first true attempt at a graphical user
interface in 16-bit.

Development was spearheaded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and ran on top
of MS-DOS, which relied on command-line input.

301
Windows 98

Windows 98, the last great DOS-based Windows.

Released in June 1998, Windows 98 built on Windows 95 and brought with it

IE 4, Outlook Express, Windows Address Book, Microsoft Chat and NetShow
Player, which was replaced by Windows Media Player 6.2 in Windows 98
Second Edition in 1999.

Windows 98 introduced the back and forward navigation buttons and the
address bar in Windows Explorer, among other things. One of the biggest
changes was the introduction of the Windows Driver Model for computer
components and accessories – one driver to support all future versions of
Windows.

USB support was much improved in Windows 98 and led to its widespread
adoption, including USB hubs and USB mice.

Windows 2000

Windows 2000 was ME’s enterprise twin. Photograph:

The enterprise twin of ME, Windows 2000 was released in February 2000 and
was based on Microsoft’s business-orientated system Windows NT and later
became the basis for Windows XP.

Microsoft’s automatic updating played an important role in Windows 2000

and became the first Windows to support hibernation.

308
Windows XP

Windows XP still survives to this day.

Arguably one of the best Windows versions, Windows XP was released in

October 2001 and brought Microsoft’s enterprise line and consumer line of
operating systems under one roof.

It was based on Windows NT like Windows 2000, but brought the consumer-
friendly elements from Windows ME. The Start menu and task bar got a visual
overhaul, bringing the familiar green Start button, blue task bar and vista
wallpaper, along with various shadow and other visual effects.

ClearType, which was designed to make text easier to read on LCD screens,
was introduced, as were built-in CD burning, autoplay from CDs and other
media, plus various automated update and recovery tools, that unlike
Windows ME actually worked.Windows XP was the longest running Microsoft
operating system, seeing three major updates and support up until April
2014 – 13 years from its original release date. Windows XP was still used on
an estimated 430m PCs when it was discontinued.

Its biggest problem was security: though it had a firewall built in, it was turned
off by default. Windows XP’s huge popularity turned out to be a boon for
hackers and criminals, who exploited its flaws, especially in Internet Explorer,
mercilessly - leading Bill Gates to initiate a “Trustworthy Computing”
initiative and the subsequent issuance of to Service Pack updates that
hardened XP against attack substantially.
