45. Who wrote 'Just for fun'?
Ans: Linus Torvalds. (Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary is a humorous
autobiography of Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel)
52. Which computer engineer got Nobel Prize for literature in 2003?
J.M. Coetzee

87. How has the influence of the online world (the Internet, networks, bulletin board systems, and e-mail)
affected the world of viruses?
Ans: Since November 1987 when the Internet Worm created by Robert T. Morris, Jr. wreaked over $100
million worth of problems on computers connected to the Internet, it has been obvious that having
computers connected on a computer network increased the possibility of virus infections. That is not to
say that networks are bad, in fact networks are becoming more and more essential and valuable all the
time. It's just that being online on a network, a BBS, or dialed into a remote computer increases the
possibility of contact with viruses.
Ans: No. It is expected that all computer users will recognize the seriousness of a virus attack and call
your company Help Desk or an experienced person immediately.
89. What can viruses and other destructive software do to your system?
Ans: Best case, a virus may turn out to be a nuisance, such as playing a song repeatedly at random
times. In the worst case, a virus can rapidly spread through a system or a group of systems on a
computer network, rapidly destroying programs and data. The biggest problems with viruses are that they
can spread and do their work silently, quickly, and efficiently, before you ever discover that they are
there.
Ans: At last count, there are over 11,000 viruses, and the list grows at about at least 50 new viruses per
month. As you would guess this certainly is enough to keep the anti-virus software producers in business.
Ans: Prevention of virus attacks requires a conscious effort in the area of "safe-computing". Safe
computing means
1) Be careful about the data and programs you put into your system.
3) you don't leave disks lying in the open where someone may place a virus on it without your knowledge
4) use a virus attack prevention program, such as McAfee's VSHIELD or Symantec Norton Anti-Virus
Ans: Systems which are affected with viruses act erratically. Sometimes the virus will identify itself with a
message giving its name on the screen of your computer monitor. In extreme cases, enough data and/or
programs may have been destroyed to prevent your computer from successfully booting.
93. How do you stop a virus once you discover you have one?
Ans: Call the Help Desk or a qualified technical person immediately. Since viruses can constitute a
serious threat to a data intensive organization such as a law firm, it is absolutely imperative that virus
outbreaks are quickly isolated, identified, and treated so it prevents their continued spread. Your
contacting the Help Desk to get experienced people dispatched on the problem is the best way to check
a virus attack.
11
116. What is Spoofing
Ans: Altering a genuine email so that it now appears to come from somewhere else, such as from your
bank and giving spurious instructions which, if followed, will imperil the security of your data.
Self-replicating ―malware‖ that injects copies of itself onto your computer. It can then cause catastrophic
damage such as destroying a hard drive but can also steal information and log keystrokes.
Ans: Phishing that targets the senior echelons of management of an organisation by a hacker in pursuit
of financial gain or greater exposure for a political cause. Whaling could be used to collect sensitive or
deeply embarrassing information about an individual e.g. salary, bonuses, private address, email and
telephone numbers.
Ans: A hacker who uses their skills for social good, or helps organisations by exposing vulnerabilities in
their IT systems. This is the opposite of a black hat.

INTRODUCTION TO CORTANA & SIRI
Microsoft Cortana (AI)
Cortana is a voice-controlled virtual assistant for Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1.
Comparable to Siri, the intelligent assistant enabled on Apple devices, Microsoft's Cortana
will use the Bing search engine and data stored on the user's smartphone by to make
personalized recommendations.
Cortana is personalized, largely based on the amount of information the user shares. For
example, by allowing access to calendar, email, contacts and browsing history the virtual
assistant can use this data to try and anticipate the user's needs.
As reported on eWeek, Cortana's answers and suggestions get better as she grows more
familiar with the user, courtesy of Microsoft's search platform. Powered by Bing, Cortana
gets to know you, builds a relationship that you can trust, and gets better over time by
asking questions based on your behavior and checking in with you before she assumes
you're interested in something.
Who is Cortana?
The virtual assistant is named after the artificially intelligent (AI) system in Microsoft's
Halo video game. In Halo, this fictional AI character provides gamers with the the backstory
and tactical information needed to play. Jen Taylor is the voice actress of Halo's Cortana
and is also the voice of the digital assistant. According to Wikipedia, Cortana's original
design was based on the Egyptian queen Nefertiti.

Windows has changed drastically over the years, but somethings stay the same, through
the rough and the smooth.
Microsoft Windows has seen nine major versions since its first release in 1985.
Over 29 years later, Windows looks very different but somehow familiar with
elements that have survived the test of time, increases in computing power
and – most recently – a shift from the keyboard and mouse to the
touchscreen.
Here’s a brief look at the history of Windows, from its birth at the hands of Bill
Gates with Windows 1 to the latest arrival under new Microsoft chief executive
Satya Nadella.
Windows 1
This is where it all started for Windows. The original Windows 1 was released
in November 1985 and was Microsoft’s first true attempt at a graphical user
interface in 16-bit.
Development was spearheaded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and ran on top
of MS-DOS, which relied on command-line input.

Windows 98
Windows 98 introduced the back and forward navigation buttons and the
address bar in Windows Explorer, among other things. One of the biggest
changes was the introduction of the Windows Driver Model for computer
components and accessories – one driver to support all future versions of
Windows.
USB support was much improved in Windows 98 and led to its widespread
adoption, including USB hubs and USB mice.

Windows 2000
The enterprise twin of ME, Windows 2000 was released in February 2000 and
was based on Microsoft’s business-orientated system Windows NT and later
became the basis for Windows XP.

Windows XP
It was based on Windows NT like Windows 2000, but brought the consumer-
friendly elements from Windows ME. The Start menu and task bar got a visual
overhaul, bringing the familiar green Start button, blue task bar and vista
wallpaper, along with various shadow and other visual effects.
ClearType, which was designed to make text easier to read on LCD screens,
was introduced, as were built-in CD burning, autoplay from CDs and other
media, plus various automated update and recovery tools, that unlike
Windows ME actually worked.Windows XP was the longest running Microsoft
operating system, seeing three major updates and support up until April
2014 – 13 years from its original release date. Windows XP was still used on
an estimated 430m PCs when it was discontinued.
Its biggest problem was security: though it had a firewall built in, it was turned
off by default. Windows XP’s huge popularity turned out to be a boon for
hackers and criminals, who exploited its flaws, especially in Internet Explorer,
mercilessly - leading Bill Gates to initiate a “Trustworthy Computing”
initiative and the subsequent issuance of to Service Pack updates that
hardened XP against attack substantially.
