PARAPHRASING

Is clearly restating something into your own words the idea or thoughts
of another person. When putting information into your own words, it
makes you think about what you've read and you will be more likely to
understand and remember it. In paraphrasing, the important rule is to
avoid plagiarism. It only shows that you've understood the information
from a certain text you've read, thus it enhance your credibility as a
writer. Also if you integrate source of information, avoid using too
much of direct quotations.

Characteristics of a Good Paraphrase


 Includes only the author's ideas
 Accurate and fair
 Entirely in your own words
 Properly cited

4R's of Paraphrasing

1. Reword: Can you replace any words with synonyms?


2. Rearrange: Can you move some words or phrases around?
3. Realize: Some information (names, dates, titles, etc.) can't be changed.
4. Recheck: Did you include the important information? Does it make
sense?

STOP-THINK-PARAPHRASE (STP)

STOP - Stop reading; cover the text.

THINK - What did I read?

PARAPHRASE - Put it in your own words; retell what you read.
