This programme is a significant part of the Maritime New Zealand


(MNZ) training requirements for students to gain the internationally
recognised Standards of Training and Certification of
Watchkeepers (STCW) Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch
Class 3 certificate of competency or Maritime New Zealand
Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework Class 4
certificate of competency.

Provides the domestic and international maritime industry, with marine engineers who are able to work in
an engineering capacity as Engineer Officer of the Watch on merchant navy vessels.

MNZ Seafarer Certification and Operation Limits Framework Class 4 certificate of

Provides the domestic maritime industry, with marine engineers who are able to work in an engineering
capacity as Chief Engineer.

core transferable skills; particularly digital literacy, problem solving, communication skills and team work.

Pathway
This Diploma will enable you to pathway into the Level 7 degree courses leading to Marine Engineering
Officer Qualifications.

Entry requirements
Training record book
There is no arranged work-based training within this programme.
However students must have completed their Marine Engineering Training Record Book (TAR book) prior
to attend the block course. This TAR book is presented to the Maritime New Zealand Examiner prior to
the final Oral Examination.

Academic Requirements
There are no minimum academic requirements for entry.

English Language Requirements


All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and
assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International
English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 6.0 (with no band lower than
5.5), issued within the last two years, or equivalent.

Need to improve your IELTS score?

NMIT offer the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) which you can use to
pathway into the Diploma in Marine Engineering.

Other requirements
Prior to attending the FFT511 and SSC511 courses, applicants must provide:
a medical certificate or other acceptable medical certificate, not more than two years old at the time
of attending the FFT511 Advanced Fire Fighting Course, and the SSC511 Proficiency in Survival Craft
course.
Recommended that applicants should be aware that they should meet the full MNZ seatime, medical,
and eyesight requirements prior to commencing this programme. Applicants should refer to
www.maritimenz.govt.nz website for the MNZ licences which this programme contributes towards.

Your main need will be a good calculator. You may also be required to purchase a number of text books -
so be prepared and budget accordingly.
