SATELLITE COMMUNICATION
DESCRIPTION:-
Life isn’t finding
yourself,
Life is about creating
yourself.
INTRODUcTION
▪ The word satellite originated from
the latin word “satellit”-meaning an
attendant, one who is constantly
hovering around attending to a
“master”.
▪ A satellite is simply any body that
moves around another (usually much
larger) one in a mathematically
predictable path called an orbit.
NEED FOR COMMUNICATION SATELLITE…..
● Early 1950’s and 1960’s , satellite communication by
metallized weather balloons…
● Moon as an artificial satellite. In 1954, the US Naval
Research Laboratory successfully transmitted the first
voice message.
● Disadvantage using Moon as a satellite….Communication
via the moon is limited by simultaneous visibility of the
moon by both the transmit and receive stations .
● For further progress, had to wait for an Artificial satellite….
NEED FOR COMMUNICATION
➔ Sender
➔ Channel
➔ Receiver
HOW SATELLITE WORKS ?
➔ A microwave repeater station in space.
➔ A repeater is a circuit, which increases
the strength of received signal and then
transmit it.
➔ Satellite’s footprint is the area which
receive a signal of useful strength from
the satellite.
➔ Area of coverage is more than that of
terrestrial systems.
▪ The area which receives a signal of
useful strength from the satellite is
known as the SATELLITE’S
FOOTPRINT.
▪ The transmission system from the
earth station to the satellite is called
the uplink and the system from the
satellite to the earth station is called
the downlink.
ADVANTAGES
▪ The coverage area of a satellite greatly
exceeds that of a terrestrial system.
▪ Transmission cost of a satellite is
independent of the distance from the centre
of the coverage area.
▪ Satellite to satellite communication is very
precise .
▪ Higher bandwidths are available for use.
DISADVANTAGES
▪ Launching satellite into orbits is costly.
▪ Satellite bandwidth is gradually
becoming used up .
▪ There is larger propagation delay in
satellite communication than in
terrestrial communication.
