This document is the mid-semester test for the course Wireless and Mobile Communication. It contains 6 questions related to concepts like handoff, cell splitting, sectoring, radio propagation mechanisms, interference, and signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). The test has a duration of 2 hours and covers 35% of the course weightage. It provides instructions to students and asks them to answer all parts of each question consecutively starting from a fresh page.

First Semester 2018-2019

Mid-Semester Test
(EC-2 Regular)

Course No. : SS ZG520

Course Title : Wireless and Mobile Communication
Nature of Exam : Closed Book
Weightage : 35%
No. of Pages = 1
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 6
Date of Exam : 29/09/2018 (AN)
Note to Students:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1. Explain the concept of handoff briefly. What is the use of Handoff Threshold? What is
the primary difference between hard and soft handoff? [6]

Q.2. Explain the concept of cell splitting and sectoring using diagrams. What happens to
cell reuse ratio (D/R) when cell splitting and sectoring is used in the existing cellular
deployment. [8]

Q.3. Radio propagation mechanisms such as Reflection, Diffraction, and Scattering affect
transmitted signals differently. Explain in brief how these mechanisms affect signals
based upon the size of objects it come in contact with. [4]

Q.4. Explain the difference between co-channel and adjacent channel interference. Explain
the problem of far-near effect with respect to adjacent channel interference. [4]

Q.5. Assume a cell is having coverage of 5 square km, and we wish to provide cellular
coverage in a geographical region of 1000 square km. There are a total of 100 radio
channels available to handle the traffic.
5.1. Calculate the system capacity for 4-cell reuse. What is the frequency reuse
factor? [4]
5.2. If cluster size N=7, how many times the cluster has to be replicated to
approximately cover the entire geographical region? Calculate the system
capacity for this case. [3]

Q.6. Assume a mobile user U is associated with a base station B1. There are two more base
stations B2 and B3 in the neighboring clusters which are transmitting on the same
carrier frequency band (800 MHz) as base station B1. All three base stations are
transmitting with 1 watt of power. The distance of user U from B1, B2, and B3 are 50,
100, and 150 meters, respectively. What will be the received SIR (in dB) and bitrate
(in Mbps) for user U? Consider Friis free space model, and system loss factor and
gains equal to 1. For bitrate calculation, assume 2 MHz bandwidth assignment to U.
