First Semester 2024-2025
Mid-Semester Test (EC-2 Regular)

Course No. : CSI ZG520

Course Title : Wireless and Mobile Communication
Nature of Exam : Closed Book
Weightage : 30% No. of Pages =1
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 6
Date of Exam : 22/09/2024 (FN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1 Show that in a two-ray ground reflected model, the path difference between the direct
and reflected wave Δ = 2hthr/d. [5]
Q.2 What are the three basic propagation mechanisms which impact propagation in a
mobile communication system ? Explain. [3]
Q.3 A mobile phone is located 5 km away from a base station. It uses a vertical λ/4 monopole
antenna with a gain of 2.55 dB to receive cellular radio signals. The carrier frequency used for
this system is 900 MHz.

(a) Find the length and effective aperture of the receiving antenna. [2]

(b) Using the 2-ray ground reflection model, find the time delay between direct and
reflected wave assuming the height of the transmitting antenna is 50 m, and the
receiving antenna is 1.5 m above ground. By how much distance is the reflected path
is greater than the direct path. [5]

Q.4 In a cellular system a minimum signal to interference ratio of 15 dB is required for

satisfactory forward channel performance . Assume that there are 6 co-channels cells in the
first tier, and all of them are at the same distance from the mobile. what is the frequency
reuse factor and cluster size that should be used for maximum capacity if the path loss
exponent is 3? Use suitable approximations. [4]

Q.5 In a cellular system with total of 917 radio channels available for handling traffic. The area of
a cell is 4 km2 and the total area is 1400 km2 with cluster of 7. [7]

(a) Calculate the system capacity.

(b) How many times signal can be replicated?

(c) Calculate the system capacity for N = 4.

(d) Compare the performance.

Q.6 What is handoff? The handoff threshold is slightly maintained above the minimum acceptable
signal level . Explain and give reason. [4]
