Rationale Essay

At the start of this project I had three initial ideas and upon conducting extensive research I
chose one to build a project around. Some aspects of the research included identifying
whether there was similar media text already made. If this was the case then my primary
focus would be ways to render my work unique and dissimilar from existing texts.

My first design surrounded the grime music industry and whether or not it had any relation
to the expediential growth rate of teenage violence and if the artists were promoting
violence in their lyrics. The reason I initially decided to pursuit this idea was primarily due to
compelling evidence found during my scrutiny of the subject. Nevertheless despite the facts
I had established a link between grime music in contrast to the time where teenage violence
was at its peak as well as blatant violence promoting lyrics, I chose not to base my project
on the topic mainly due to its lack of originality as other members of my focus group were
also considering basing their projects on the matter.

My second initiative was to base my project around youth football. In this documentary I
wanted to establish a change in how the lack of youth players opportunity has changed in
the last 10-15 years and if it to continuously change, This subject can also be associated with
the influx of overseas players and whether this has any effect on the England’s national
team falling in South Africa. This in turn also ties in with the extensity of the detrimental
effect it has on the grass root level youths.

My third idea was about the increasing rate of drug use within young males and females
primarily in the capital (London). I wanted to investigate how this is affecting young people,
after intensive research I found out that the main drug that is being used is cannabis.
Although cannabis is seen my most as a class C drug this can also act as a gateway drug, a
drug that will lead on to harder and more dangerous drugs. The feasibility of this idea is
something that I have been thinking about because the likely hood of a person to go in front
of a camera and say that they consume illegal drugs is very unlikely.

This idea was also scrutinised by my focus picking out more negatives in turn to positives. At
the end of this research although this is a big issue within young people I have decided to
drop this idea and focus on my youth football project design.

After long and hard consideration I had decided to undertake my second project design
regarding youth football and its dimensions into production, I have chosen this idea for
numerous reasons primarily due to my relatively high level of affection for the sport. Some
of the other reasons were that this is becoming a main topic in England and also the UK.
Also after doing some research I found out there are not many other documentaries that
are similar to my design. Nonetheless youth players not getting enough opportunity are
regarded as currently a hot topic to discuss in current football which would therefore make
my topic more feasible.
There are other reasons such as that this topic was openly encouraged by my focus group
and researching it was enjoyable. The contacts that I have put on my contact list, some of
them are quite adventurous but if conducted properly it will be a great documentary which
would be a challenge which I am willing to undertake to perfect my documentary.

One of the ideas that I was deeply considering was to take under production of the idea
based grime music this idea had every resources to make a good production except some of
the contacts I need to do this production would be quiet hard to get and youth football
from my focus group. If I had to rank my ideas my grime music idea would be second, so I
feel that youth football idea is the right idea for me.

There are not that many limitations to this idea, however one could be getting an interview
with a top football player, nonetheless there were other idle candidates. I wanted to film my
documentary at well known locations such as Wembley stadium or at the grounds of
another top flight premier league team.

This idea that I have chosen meets the BBC brief of inform ,educate and entertain because it
informs people of the growing situation regarding the finance in football and displaying to
people just how it has changed over the past couple of years.

In my focus group there were not any football fans and they did not know any knowledge
about the game and the problems that faced young players trying to make it in the game.
But other than my focus group this idea is very viable to the audience and the audience
would deem it interesting. To execute this production would be reasonability easy due to
my initial research and passion for game, which I believe is idle for supplying me with a
wealth of questions ask my chosen experts.

This is vital in my production because it gives me better feedback. Location was one of the
things I was taking into consideration but I have thought of some alternatives if I can’t get
my first option which was Wembley stadium but other alternatives are being taken into
consideration.

Equipment is openly available to me via my school, they possess cameras, tripods and
microphones and other parts. Also just as important as the filming equipment, is the editing
equipment; within the school I have access to Apple Macintosh and the I movie program
which I will be using to edit my work so the equipment is there to execute my production.

Overall I have decided to take on this idea under production because a personal interest and
also it will be a good documentary. There are some tasks that I have to overcome such as
making it appeal to both genders of my audience and possibly keeping it under 5minutes.
The next steps I will take is doing a story board call sheets and scripts to perfect my pre
production which will give me a good base before I start my production.
