Lesson Plan Science GR 4 - Recycling
Lesson Plan Science GR 4 - Recycling
This lesson gives the students a deeper understanding of alternative ways they can reduce
wastes within our world. They will watch a video that explains reduce, reuse, recycle and
create their own meaning of each and then list some examples of ways that we can do each,
creating a nice poster as a reminder to be friendly to the environment so that we can all stay
healthy.
Critical Questions
-use an ipad or computer -I have an example of what the -Have students that learn a little
to search reduce, reuse, finished product is to look like, bit slower only write 1 or 2
recycle themselves. and a slide show with the steps extra examples for each rather
Create activity it on the for them to refer to than all 5
computer.
Assessment
Formative: Discussion/observation – will know that students understand and have learned
what the 3 R’s are if they can tell me reduce, reuse, recycle and I will also know that they
understand what each are based on their written definitions and their examples of ways that
they can reduce waste.
Learning Resources
These must be relevant and age appropriate and from a reliable source. If it is on online
resource provide an active link. If it a book, cite the book and author. A good lesson will
have a variety of resources.
Introduction (7 min.):
Group Discussion:
Last day you talked about the plant cycle. Does anyone know the 3 R’s that we try to follow so
that we can keep the earth, plants and environment healthy? Looking for someone to say
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We are going to watch a video that explains reducing, reusing, and recycling.
On the handout that I give to you there is a spot underneath each word that has a spot for the
definition, listen carefully to the video when they talk about reduce, reuse, recycle and write
your definition of them in that spot.
Also make sure that you are listening for examples of how you can do each.
Comprehension question:
What are we doing with this handout during the video?
Where are we writing the definition/what each is about?
What else are you listening for?
Can re-watch the video here so they can listen again for what each means and some examples
What was an example of a way to reduce waste? Take own bag while shopping, turn lights
off, walk instead of drive, use less water, stop junk mail, dish clothes instead of paper
towels
What was an example of a way to recycle? Bottles, Paper, Cardboard, Cans, Plastic, Jars
What was an example of a way to reuse? Donate old clothes, use both sides of paper,
refilling water bottles, using your older siblings clothes, use Tupperware containers
We are going each make a poster to show others some ideas of how they can reduce, recycle,
reuse. [show them my example]
Try to do your best work, these might be put up on the board outside the class.
Put up the power point.
You have already started by writing what reduce, recycle and reuse means while we were
watching the video. If you are not finished, that is step 1
Step 2 - write 5 ways/examples that people can do to reduce, reuse, recycle. We have already
put up 2 for each on the board, you can use those but think of 3 other ways for each so that you
have 5 in total.
Step 3 – come see me to get a copy of the earth and the arrows and color those – can use
crayons or markers
Step 4 – cut out the arrows and the earth
Step 5 – come and see me and I will explain how to put it all together.
If students finish with more than 5 minutes left, give them the waste management bingo sheet
to color, cut and create.
If there is only about 5 minutes then have them silent read.
Closure (5 min.): Consolidation Learning; Indicate clean up protocol, material management etc.
Transition to Next Lesson. How do you plan to prepare students for the next period?
Are they changing classes? Is another teacher coming in to the room.
Transition:
“Who lives in a pineapple under the sea” “Spongebob Squarepants” – Call and response to get
students attention.
