What is a diphthong?
• Diphthong is a vowel sound made by pronouncing two vowels
quickly one after the other.
E. Discussing new • Diphthongs are seen when we combine two vowel symbols in a
concepts and practicing new single syllable. Examples are oy, oi, ou, and ow.
skills # 2 -The diphthong ow and ou make the ow sound as in cow.
-The diphthong oy and oi make the oi sound (think of the words
“boy” and “foil”). When that sound comes in the middle of a word,
we use “oi”. If it comes at the end of the word, we use “oy”.
