RBT

This document provides an outline for teaching the functional elements of instruments. It begins with introducing the topic and providing general and specific learning objectives. The objectives are mapped to different knowledge dimensions and cognitive process types. Key terms and diagrams are listed. The main topics are then broken down into discussion, a mind map activity, a summary of the main points, assessment questions, and references. The overall aim is to help students understand the concept of functional elements within instruments.

Objective Oriented Learning Process Format RBT (OLF)

Branch& Year: Electrical and Electronics Semester: IV

Engineering & II
Subject code & Title : EE 6404 Measurements Unit: I (Functional elements of an
and Instrumentation instrument)
Lesson No :1(4)
T-L tools: PPT, BB & Videos Faculty name: R. JEBA RAJ

Prerequisite Knowledge:Engineering Physics and Engineering Mathematics.

1. Topic for Learning through evocation:

A measurement instrument is a device capable of detecting change, physical or

otherwise, in a particular process. It then converts these physical changes into some form
of information understandable by the user.

Consider the example of Figure, When the switch is closed, the resistor generates heat,
increasing the temperature of the liquid in the tank. This increase is detected by the
measurement instrument and shown on the scale of that instrument. We can get the
information on the physical changes in a process using direct indication or a recorder.

2. Topic Introduction: Functional elements of an instrument

2.1. General Objective:

OLF-RBT / M&I- UNIT 1 /EEE/SCADCET -To be used by teacher as a teaching learning process guidelines
Students will understand about the concept of functional elements of an
instruments.

2.2. Specific Objectives:

The students will be able to
1. Define an instrument (S)
2. Comparison between Direct and Indirect method of measurement. (E)
3. Understand the meaning of primary and secondary measurements (S)
4. Classify the instruments (E)
5. Classify the various functional elements of a measurement system. (E)

Taxonomy of Objectives

Knowledge
Explanatory Notes: (This is not the notes for the topic. It is an explanatory notes to remember the reason for
doing a particular mapping in the table above)
1. The term “instrument” is comes under factual knowledge
2. Comparision between direct and indirect method of measurement is comes under the concept to be
remembered and Understand.
3. Explanation of primary and secondary measurements is to be remembered in order.
4. Classifications of the instrument is to be understand.
5. Classifications of the various functional elements of a measurement systems are to be understand.
A. Factual Knowledge: It is a knowledge that contains the basic elementsstudents must know if they are to be
acquainted with the discipline or to solve any of the problems in it.
B. Conceptual Knowledge: It includes knowledge of categories and classifications and the relationships
between and among them.
C. Procedural Knowledge:It is the knowledge that takes the form of series of logical steps to be followed. It is
more skill oriented and can include algorithms, techniques and methods.
D. Meta Cognitive Knowledge:It is the knowledge of one’s own cognition.

2.4: Key words: Sensor, Analog to Digital conversion, Display, etc.,

2.5: Key diagrams (if any):

OLF-RBT / M&I- UNIT 1 /EEE/SCADCET -To be used by teacher as a teaching learning process guidelines
3. Discussion:

Students are allowed to discuss among themselves and the doubts asked by them are
clarified.

4. Mind Map:(It must revolve around the concept)

5.Summary:
Primary sensing element : It converts analog signal into electrical signal
Signal conditioning element : It converts analog electrical signal into digital signal
Data Transmission element : To transmit the data from one to another.
Data Presentation element : The information about the measuring quantity is to be
conveyed to the system for monitoring.
Data storage element : To re-create the stored data.
6.Assessment through Stimulating questions/Analogy/New ideas and Concepts:

1.What is an instrument?
2. Define Tertiary measurements.
