A good paraphrase:

 Communicates the important points made in the quote


 Uses different words than the original quote, and a different sentence structure
 Will cite the source that the quote came from to avoid plagiarism
 Makes sense and doesn’t confuse the reader
 Doesn’t just change a few of the words
 Doesn’t change the idea that the original quote was communicating

Practice with Paraphrase


Directions: Read the original quote and then read the paraphrase examples. Choose the best paraphrase and
explain why it is the best paraphrase. Then, choose the worst paraphrase and justify your reasoning.

ORIGINAL QUOTE #1
“Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with over a billion users worldwide, a figure it reached in
October 2012. Roughly 200 million of them are in the United States, and 600 million of them log in through
mobile phones” (NY Times, 2012).

A. In October 2012, Facebook became the biggest social network in the world. It now has over one billion
members. In the U.S. alone, there are about 200 million people on Facebook.
