Community Service Proposal

This project outline proposes a community cleanup effort to address the problem of litter pollution in Oahu, Hawaii. A group of three students will organize cleaning different public areas like parks, beaches, and streets of trash on weekends or in their spare time. They will properly dispose of collected trash. The goals are to make areas nicer and reduce environmental pollution. Methods include picking up trash and putting it in bags to dispose of. Areas will be cleaned thoroughly but multiple locations have not been determined. Progress will be evaluated based on the amount of trash collected. Communication methods like news articles and social media postings will spread information about their work, and funding of around $44 will be needed for supplies at first.

Project Outline
Pollution: Cleaning the Community

Submitted by: Darian Morris, Angus Wu, and Reyn Yogi-Sonobe


Abstract
Pollution. We all know what it is. Pollution can scale from chemical waste to
landfill overflow, but the pollution I want to focus on is the pollution that
our population can easily avoid, littering. Littering is a huge problem despite
the constant berating people get when they do it not to mention the huge
fines. I think it's time that we as a community do something about it. So my
friends and I are going to form a team and find an area on Oahu that needs
attention and clean it. We will clean a selected area for a few hours over the
weekend and return to it as needed until completed.

Statement of Need
The issue at hand is that, even though there are some preventive measures,
there is still a very high amount of easily preventable litter in the
environment. This project is necessary due to the fact that all of this litter is
very harmful to the environment and should be eliminated entirely. This
project will not only benefit the environment but it will also benefit anyone
who uses the area we clean, in other words the public in general. This is due
to the polution in the area being eliminatd and therefore reducing any
illnesses due to it. Although there have been some preventive measures such
as signs, PSA's, and laws preventing it, litter, whether it be intentional or not,
may always be an issue. This clean up will act as a stopgap until a better
solution can be made.

Project Activity,
Methodology, and
Outcomes
We choose this project in order to address the issue of pollution in our
community and environment. In order to do this we are cleaning up public
areas such as parks, beaches, and streets. Other solutions to this problem are
recycling and increasing awareness but we choose this particular solution
because it is the simplest and most effective solution out of them all. The
activities that we will be doing to clean up are picking up trash and disposing
of it properly. We will all do this in our spare time or in groups at different
locations. After this we will properly dispose of this trash into its respective
container. All of this work will make the area nicer and reduce pollution in
the environment. We have a large group which allows us to clean up more
than other groups.

Evaluation
The quantity of our work will depend on how much trash there is at each
location but we will clean each location with the same quality and leave
them without trash. We plan to clean up several different locations but we
have not decided where or when we will do this. Cleaning will take place in
groups or by ourselves and will be done by walking around the area and
picking up trash that we find lying around. We will put them in trash bags and
properly recycle and dispose of them after we have cleared out the area. After
that, we will move onto the next area and repeat this process.

Dissemination
Our way for communicating with the public about our work for fixing easily
preventable pollution will vary over time as our project grows or stays the
same. At first, we would not be able to use social media as we have a small
following. The small following would prevent us from getting the word out as
efficient as possible. When we are ready to make our project go public, we
would most likely go onto news websites and newspapers and submit an
article stating what we do overtime to help fix the problem of easily
preventable pollution. If the newspapers or articles help us to gain a better
community, we would then post onto social media to gain more of a
community to support our cause. If the community is big enough, we would
make our own group or join another group that has the same ideal on how to
fix easily preventable pollution. Our final step to make ourselves public
would be to make videos on what we do and hope that others will join our
cause to fix easily preventable pollution.

Gloves: $9.00 per person
Tongs: $2.00 per person
Total Cost: ~$44.00

After we run out of money, we can make this project sustainable by not
polluting ourselves and by reducing the amount of trash we produce while
also recycling the trash that we collect overtime. This will make our project
more and more sustainable overtime as we reduce the amount of pollution in
our own communities.
