In cartoon movie “Rio’ , it shows the beauty and life of
Brazillian people. If you notice one of the scene in movie
which is the festival (in the very beginning of the movie) but
actually it is called as Carnival (a festival held before Lent
that includes music and dancing) wherein SAMBA is the
typical dance that is at the heart of the Rio Carnival.

So today we are going to learn about what is samba.

I. History of Samba
a. It is uncertain whether the African Semba
dance is related to the Brazilian Samba
b. In only two Bantu languages does the verb-
root "semba" mean "dance", while in others
it denotes unrelated things like "hunger" or
"cloth" (but not "belly")
c. It has been performed as a street dance at
carnival, the pre-Lenten celebration, for
almost 100 years. (students will listen)

II. Charcteristics (Ballroom Samba)


a. Samba has a very specific rhythm,
highlighted to its best by characteristic
