AFT SEAL

The aft seal consists of three major parts,

that is, (1) four rubber seal rings. (2) a
metal housing holding the rubber seal
rings, and (3) a liner which rotates
together with the propeller shaft
The metal housing is made up, in the
order from the stern frame side, of an aft
flange casing, an aft intermediate' ring A,
an aft intermediate ring B, an aft
intermediate ring C, and a split--type aft
seal cover. Rubber seal rings are inserted
between these metal rings, and bolted
together.
The clamp section of each seal ring is securely fitted to the metal rings' inner circumferences and to the small grooves on
the inner side of the metal rings, so that the clamp part is made rigidly oil-and-water-tight
The material of the liner is highly resistant to corrosion and wear,
FWD SEAL
The forward seal consists of four major parts, that is,
(1) two rubber seal rings, (2) a metal housing holding
the rubber seal rings, (3) a liner which rotates
together with the propeller shaft, and (4) a clamp
ring which holds the liner.
The metal housing is made up, from aft to fore, a
forward flange casing, a forward intermediate ring
and a forward seal cover.
As in the case of the aft seal, the metal rings of the
forward seal are bolted together, so that the rubber
seal rings can be readily clamped and assembled.
The material of the liner features excellent wear-
resistant and lip-lubricating properties

Lube oil system
Since the lube oil system of each ship would very with the ships type, draft and shipyard's standards. we recommend that
system be operated in accordance with drawings provided by the yard. The following instructions are based on basic ideas
of tube oil system.
In case of automatic control ship, notice to add the high-level alarm etc.
Stern tube bearings
In order to keep the LO. pressure higher than seawater pressure at the shaft center under full load by 0.015 - 0.029 MPa
gravity tank is provided on board. For deep-draft vessels, two gravity tanks are provided, one for use under full load (high-
level) and the other for ballast (low-level).
Aft seal
For the oil chamber between seal rings #1 and #2, supply the oil in installing seal assembly and change the oil in dry-
docking in case of attaching plugs to seal assembly.
For the oil chamber between seal rings #2 and #3, without piping inboard. as same as item 3-2-1 with piping in board as
follows. LO. piping is provided to oil chamber between seal rings #2 and #3, keep the valve normally opened. Check the oil
by opening the drain plugs once a month. In case of the oil leakage to outboard or stern tuba, normally closed the valves
and sometimes opened them in order to change the oil.
Joint the pipe line between #3 and #3s oil chamber to the stem tube L0. pipe line, and provided with valves in the
applicable positions.
Valve operation
Normal condition: Open the valve and keep the pressure into the oil chamber between #3 and #3s seal rings equal to the
stern tube LO. pressure. (The seal ring #3 is kept in stand-by condition.)
Abnormal condition: Close the valve into the oil chamber between #3 and #3s seal rings. (The seal ring #3s is operating
condition.)
When installing the seal. remove the plugs and feed L.O. into each oil chamber between seal rings. Change LO, every time
the ships is in dry-dock.
Forward seal
For relatively small vessels, natural or automatic circulation system is adopted, and for large vessels, forced circulation
system.
