Background:

The second jet fighter to enter service with the Fleet Air Arm. Design work on the aircraft
was disrupted by the economic situation combined with the severe winter of 1947, and the
first flight of the prototype occurred on 2nd September 1947. Production was then affected by
the simultaneous production of the Hawker Hunter, leading to Sea Hawk production
transferring to Armstrong Whitworth.

The Sea Hawk became operational with the FAA in March 1953.

A straight wing, single engine jet aircraft (with bifurcated exhaust), the Sea Hawk was
pleasant to fly, agile with good handling and a good instantaneous turn rate, but with a less
good sustained turn. It started service life as a fighter (F1 and F2), then developed as an attack
aircraft (FB3, which entered service July 1954). The addition of 2 additional underwing
pylons saw the aircraft develop its full attack potential (FGA4), but also showed up its lack of
power. To address this, a more powerful engine was developed, leading to the FB5 (re-
engined FB3) and the FGA6 (re-engined FGA4 / new build).

The Sea Hawk enjoyed limited export success, serving with the German Marineflieger, the
Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service and the Indian Navy, in addition to the FAA. Front line
service with the FAA ended in December 1960. Dutch service ran from September 1957 to
1964; from 1959, the aircraft were equipped to carry Sidewinder 1A missiles. German service
with the Mk100 ran from July 1958 until the end of 1966. Mk101’s with a pod-mounted
surface search radar (giving bad-weather reconnaissance capability) entering service in April
1959. German Sea Hawks also had a Sidewinder 1A capability. Service with the Indian Navy
ran from January 1960 to 1984, primarily FGA6s, but with some ex-German Mk100’s and
Mk101’s as attrition replacements.

Sea Hawks saw combat in 1956 (Suez: Operation Musketeer), and in the Indo-Pakistan wars
of 1965 and 1971.

Scenario SH1: Early birds.

The Sea Hawk suffered delays in design and then in production, as priority was given to
Hawker Hunter production. Without these delays, the Sea Hawk may have made it into action
in Korea.

Set up scenario K-2, but substitute Sea Hawk F1s for the F9F-2s.

FAA training standards: Good.

Sea Hawk Fuel: Start: 60; Bingo: 40.

Load: Stations 2, 3: 450L FT (Empty) (Load 3; Config: CL).

Scenario SH2: Sink the Karel Doorman. (Hypothetical) (Solo)

Background: August, 1962.

The Dutch have reluctantly agreed to end their colonial rule in West New Guinea, and intend
that it become an independent state. However, neighbouring Indonesia objects, intending to
annex the former Dutch colony for itself. As the Indonesian military prepares to invade with a
build up of Soviet supplied weapons and advisors, the Dutch strengthen their defences in
West New Guinea, with the aircraft carrier Karel Doorman delivering Hawker Hunters to
strength the West New Guinea forces.

Six newly supplied Tu-16 aircraft of the Indonesian airforce head out, each armed with two
AS-1 air-to-surface missiles, intent on sinking the Karel Doorman.

Outcome:

Historically, the US, worried about the increasingly pro-Soviet altitude of the Indonesian
government, pressured the Dutch into agreeing to Indonesian occupation of West New
Guinea. In September 1965, an anti-Communist coup by the army replaced the pro-Soviet
regime.

Maps.

Use all 6 maps. The maps are used to build a row, 1 deep by 6 long:

Ignore all terrain features shown on the map: the terrain is open ocean.

Aircraft map Hex facing Alt speed config load

TU16B #3 A1 2101 E 12 5.0 DT -

Sea Hawk #1 B1 Any W <20 <6.0 ½ 4

Sea Hawk #2 B1 Any W <20 <6.0 ½ 4

Reinforcements:

At the start of turn 2, place 3 TU16 on the map, 1 each in hexes 1901, 2002 and 2101. The
same height/speed/facing/load as the first formation. Also, the same restrictions on
manoeuvring apply (though the restriction for all Indonesian aircraft is removed the moment
any spot a Dutch aircraft or are attacked).

Notes:

1) No aircraft begin spotted. Indonesian aircraft are silver. AS-1 missiles are silver. Dutch
aircraft are camouflaged.

2) Pilot Training Standard: Indonesian: Limited; Dutch: Good

3) Aircraft loads:

TU16B: AS-1 on stations 1, 3 (Config: DT)

Sea Hawk: Stations 2,3: 400L FT (empty); Stations 1,4: AIM-9B. (Config ½ ).

4) Game Length:

The game ends when all 12 AS-1 missiles have been launched and exited under guidance
from the eastern edge of the map, or been lost (TU16 carrying them or guiding them shot
down).

Count how many AS-1 missiles cross the east boundary of map C2 (ie how many exit the
eastern edge of the map). Roll 1D10.

If the roll is < number of missiles, the Karel Doorman is sunk. The Dutch are forced to
withdraw from West New Guinea. Indonesian victory.

If the roll = number of missiles. The Karel Doorman is damaged, but still operational. UN
intervention brings a ceasefire. The resulting negotiations hand West New Guinea to
Indonesia. Draw.

If the roll > number of missiles. As the Indonesian president proudly boasts to the assembled
world media how his airforce has sunk the Dutch carrier, Sea Hawks from the still very much
undamaged carrier raid a number of Indonesian air bases. The war escalates. A Soviet
submarine sinks the Karel Doorman, but this triggers a major intervention on behalf of the
Dutch from western powers, led by the US. A regional war breaks out and everybody loses
(but the Dutch keep West New Guinea).

5) TU16B flight:

The Indonesian TU-16s must fly straight and level until they spot a Dutch aircraft or any
Indonesian aircraft is attacked (gun fire or missile attack roll), after which all TU-16 are free
to manoeuvre.

Initially, each fly east at speed 5.0. Once the TU16s are free to manoeuvre, they increase to
full MIL power, (gaining 0.5 accel/turn), but remain limited to configuration speed limits,
carrying forward any excess accel.

6) TU16 defensive fire.

At the end of each turn, each TU16 may fire at any Sea Hawk within range at which it has not
already fired at this turn (regardless of whether the Sea Hawk has launched a gun attack on
that TU16), except for aircraft that are in the TU16s front arc (forward of 90 degree line) and
below the TU16. Check for tail radar ranging if applicable.

7) AS-1 missiles.

The AS-1 is an early sea-skimming air-to surface missile. It depends on radar guidance from
the launch aircraft to guide it to its target, before switching to its own guidance in the terminal
phase.

Each TU-16 may launch 1 AS-1 per turn. However, each bomber may guide both AS-1
missiles once they are launched. To launch an AS-1, the TU-16 must start its move within the
orange shaded area on the map (maps B1, B2, C1 or C2), wings level (no facing change this
move), and heading due east. At the end of the bombers move, place a counter representing
the AS-1 missile on the bomber (Mig-15 counters are appropriate the missile looks like a
miniature Mig-15). After launch, the bomber must meet the requirements of beam riding
missile guidance to maintain guidance for the missile.

Missile flight: Each turn after launch, the missile moves forward with speed 6.5, and descends
1 level of altitude until at level 1. The missile thereafter flies straight and level at speed 6.5.

The missile may be attacked in flight: Treat as a Vis 3, Siz +2 aircraft on military power, with
Vulnerability -3.

8) Advanced rules:

8.a: Fuel: The TU-16s have plenty; the Sea Hawks enough to get back to the carrier, and not
enough to get elsewhere. Ignore fuel use.

8.b: Weather: Clear.

9. Multiplayer variant:

The Indonesians would likely have escorted the TU16s with MIGs.

Assuming land based Dutch Hunters have stripped away some of the escorting MIGs.

Add 2 x MIG-17F to the Indonesian forces (load: 2x400L FT (empty); Load:2, Config: CL).
Start Fuel: 110; Bingo: 80.

Add 2x Sea Hawk Mk50 to the Dutch forces (Load as Sea Hawk 1 and 2).

Aircraft map Hex facing Alt speed config load

MIG-17F #1 A1 1602 E 15 5.0 CL 2

MIG-17F #2 A1 1701 E 15 5.0 CL 2

Sea Hawk #3 B1 Any W <20 <6.0 ½ 4

Sea Hawk #4 B1 Any W <20 <6.0 ½ 4

The TU-16’s must still fly straight and level until they become free to manoeuvre, but
thereafter are controlled fully by the Indonesian player.

Modified TU-16B flight and AS-1 launch. Gordon and Rigmant report that the “when the
antenna for the K-1M* was lowered it was recommended that the maximum speed should not
exceed 520-550 km/h to prevent vibration from the radome”. When an AS-1 is launched, a
launch roll is required for the missile to be successfully gathered in by the guidance system.
The basic roll required is 9 or less. Reduce this target number by 1 for each 0.5 of speed in
excess of 4.0 that the launch aircraft has at the moment of launch.

*K-1M is guidance radar for AS-1 missiles.
