I. INTRODUCTION
Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. By virtue of its
geographical circumstances, our country is highly susceptible to natural disasters such as
earthquakes, typhoons, tropical cyclones, and volcanic eruptions. According to UNFA Philippines,
Philippines is ranked third in the 2018 World Risk Index of most disaster-prone countries having a
year-round experiences of almost all forms of disasters with numerous complex emergencies due
to armed conflict. Due to this, we have to be prepared and ready for all of the disasters that might
come. Republic Act 10121 also known as “AN ACT STRENGTHENING THE PHILIPPINE DISASTER
RISK REDUCTION AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, PROVIDING FOR THE NATIONAL DISASTER RISK
REDUCTION AND MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK AND INSTITUTIONALIZING THE NATIONAL
DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND MANAGEMENT PLAN, APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR AND
FOR OTHER PURPOSES” is a way to establish ways and inform people especially the students to
become aware of the disasters , mitigate and have a contingency plan to prevent the large scale
effects.
II. RATIONALE
Formerly called National Disaster Consciousness Month by virtue of Executive Order 137
s.1999 signed by President Joseph Estrada, the celebration was renamed to National Disaster
Resilience Month NDRM through and Executive Order No. 29 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte
on June 28, 2017. This was done every year on the month of July. The observance emphasized the
shift from disaster consciousness to disaster resilience that means “the capacity to recover quickly
from difficulties; toughness”. This year’s theme was “KAHANDAAN SA SAKUNAT PELIGRO PARA SA
TUNAY NA PAGBABAGO”, highlighted the importance of being prepared to face any calamity in
order to minimize the effects among lives and properties.
School DRRRM joined the whole month celebration having various activities that
disseminated students and school personnel on readiness in calamities and disasters. Among the
activities were posting of the IEC materials to different buildings, room by room orientation on the
conduct of Earthquake drill and Fire Drill and the students watched the Diasaster Preparedness
videos. As a culminating activity, SDRRRM invited FO1 Aron Roy Novicio of Mendez Bureau of Fire
Protection to conduct a Safety Training to our school personnel and students specifically the
scope and content of RA 10121 ON July 30, 2019.
To mitigate the impacts of emergency and calamity situations in the country, public
awareness and participation in disaster management, preparation , response is necessary. As one
of the government institution we support the campaign of our country that helps to ensure public
safety and prepradeness.
