PROBLEM STATEMENT Traffic Volume Study

Traffic volume studies are needed to describe traffic patterns and inform capacity analysis. The methodology involves sketching an intersection layout, recording vehicle counts and types every 5 minutes for 30 minutes per lane using a stopwatch and paper, and calculating speeds by dividing distance traveled by time. Vehicle data is collected from 3 intersections and tabulated.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Data on the traffic volume is essential in describing the hourly, daily or yearly number of
vehicles, as well as the vehicles composition. Capacity analysis for straight road section or
intersection also rely on the traffic volume information, hence, the traffic volume study is needed
to be done.
METHODOLOGY

Apparatus:

1. Stopwatch
2. Pen and paper

Procedures:

1. The layout of the intersection of the road was sketched and dimensioned. The movement
of the traffic (left or right) was identified for each lane.
2. For every five minutes, the number and type of vehicles were recorded up to 30 minutes
using five bar tallies or tick mark.
3. Speed of every vehicles were also recorded. The speed was determined using the
distanced the vehicles travelled divided by the time travelled.
4. The counting and speed determination were taken for every lane at the intersection.
5. Step 1 until 4 were repeated for the next two intersections. Then, the recorded data was
tabulated.
