Humans curiosity had led to pursuit of knowledge. Education started as early as the pre-
literate period wherein knowledge and skills were usually passed through oral
discussions and imitation that led to the development of their culture and society. Early
philosophers also questioned about the composition of the universe ("What is
Philosophy", 2019) that became the pre-basis of later science discoveries.
At present, we still value the importance of education though unlike in the past,
educators now are required to utilize reference materials instead of creating new
theories and ideas, but the significant change is the adaptation of a feedback system of
the student’s learning. Through the development of formal education, grades as
measured by numerous and different tests and activities became a basis for a student’s
learning progress. It has been used for many years and is a practical way to determine
if the student has learned the school’s curriculum. It is important for college admissions
and job applications but does not necessarily determine an individual’s success as
commonly people would assume. The statement grades determine success does not
have enough valid reason to be considered as true.
The first premise why grades does not define success is that grades cannot measure
every person’s character and intelligence. Getting correct answers in a test or a
recitation can result to high grades but there are non-cognitive abilities such as
curiosity, teamwork, oral communication, creativity and others that cannot be reflected
on the report card because current and most grading system only consist of limited
criteria. Since a person is unique from another, there are also a difference of strengths
and weaknesses in type of intelligence. As stated by Einstein “everybody is a genius.
But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it
is stupid.” In relation with this it means that you can’t grade a student in the same
criteria as every other student.
In addition, grades can be influence by the encoder which is the teacher. At times
teachers and professors can be subjective. Not all teachers are the generous in grades,
which is a particular statement. Some may be strict, and some may be too carefree.
Some may be good in teaching while some are not. These factors can affect how a
student’s grade will turn out. This is why college students choose professors that they
know will give them a high or passing grade in that specific class. Student-teacher
relationship can also be a factor, sometimes it is an unavoidable bias.

Grades are ideally to be a tool for effective learning but students and even their parents
have become obsessed with it resulting for it to become the end goal of the education.
The real learning is neglected and left behind because of this. Students are turning to
memorizing terms and definitions but often times forget it after the tests because the
purpose is short term which is to pass the exam instead of the long term which is to
understand and retain the knowledge. Obtaining a grade becomes a signal for the end
of learning. There is an absence of “love for wisdom” that defines Philosophy ("What is
Philosophy", 2019), the study of knowledge. In relation to this it hinders the learning of
the students.
The three reasons mentioned which are grades cannot measure character, grades can
be influenced by the encoder and grades hinders learning, are three independent
premises that supports two (2) conclusion which is that that grades are inadequate form
of feedback and second is it hinders the learning process. From these two (2)
conclusion it can also conclude that it also an inefficient way to determine or define an
individual success because character which does not reflect in the grades and one’s
dedication for learning is essential to a person’s success.
A person’s character is important to success because it identifies how you well you can
achieve goals if through hardwork and not through just procrastination. Relationship
with people is also essential especially if you have to work on a group or team. Through
various stages of life, different people will come and understanding how to deal with
each type is beneficial for a good relationship and reputation.
A successful person never stops learning. They are always curious to new knowledge
that they can add to their current learnings. Learnings in later life can be through to
experiences. As oppose to school where in the terms and definitions are given before
the tests, in real life we are first given problems or experience then afterwards are the
answer or the real idea just like as stated by Aristotle where in experience comes first
before the idea.
Many self-made billionaires today did not receive high grades during their education and
some did not even have a degree, but look what they have achieved now. Education
and grades are just a factor but not the sure key for success though this does not mean
they are not important too. Grades can become motivation to strive better but learning
should come first and the progress that have shaped our characters.
