Math SBA 3

The document is a student business analysis (SBA) project for a mathematics class comparing two local food shops, Beacon Café and Red Tent. It includes an introduction outlining the topic, a methodology section describing the data collection process, and initial presentation of data tables. The SBA will analyze various sale strategies between the two shops, such as calculating profits from price changes, discounts, and conversions of customer base. Mathematical concepts like profit, loss, discount, and simple interest will be applied to real-world scenarios.

Project Title:
An analysis of possible business sale strategies taken
by two competing foods shops.

2|Page
Introduction:
Curiosity has struck the creators of this SBA and urges them
to study the effects of students on the sales, prices, etcetera
on two food businesses. This SBA contains a series of real-
world mathematical applications in finding the solutions to
possible scenarios formed by the creators of the SBA. We
hope that we have been able to gather enough valid data to
base our investigations to create a valuable SBA.
Across the road of The Bishops’ High School, there are two
“shops” that sell food; Beacon Café and a small joint
normally referred to as ‘The Red Tent’. 90% of 5 th Form
Students of The Bishops’ High School purchase common food
items and drinks from these places during their lunch period.
Our group will calculate certain sales strategies that might
be taken by these “shops”.

METHODOLOGY
The researchers observed the businesses and carried multiple
interviews with the fifth form students. This was done in order to
obtain valuable data to answer the following questions in order to
understand various sale strategies.

Sale Strategy Questions:

a) Out of 10 common food items, which shop benefits more if
five of these item is bought?

b) If 55% of 5th formers buy from Red Tent and 35% from
Beacon Café, how much money would each food shop make
if each person were to buy 3 common drink items each.

c) If Beacon Café decides to place a 5% student discount on all

food items, what is the amount they earn on food, pizza,
juice, cassava and egg ball with the 35% students if they buy
each item?

d) If food sold by Red-Tent was originally $500 now increased

to $600, how much profit is being made when 55% 5th form
students still purchase it?

e) If Beacon decided to reduce the price of their food to $460

and 20% of Red Tent’s student customers converted to
Beacon, how much lost would Red Tent face and how much
more money would Beacon Earn compared to the previous
35%?

f) Red Tent is to borrow $2,600,000 to expand their business

from the bank at a rate of 18% per annum Simple Interest
for 5 years. What would have been the total amount of
money they would have to repay the bank?

A.
i. Price of Beacon’s Juice = $200
Price of Red Tent’s Juice = -$100
The difference of the two = $100

ii. Price of Beacon’s Cassava Ball = $120

Price of Red Tent’s Cassava Ball = -$ 60
The difference of the two = $ 60

iii. Price of Red Tent’s Pin Wheel = $200

Price of Beacon’s Pin Wheel = -$180
The difference of the two = $ 20

iv. Price of Red Tent’s Canada Dry = $300

Price of Beacon’s Canada Dry = -$200
The difference of the two = $100

v. Price of Red Tent’s Pine Tart = $160

Price of Beacon’s Pine Tart = -$140
The difference of the two = $ 20
Total difference made by Red Tent = $140
Total difference made by Beacon = $160
Answer = Beacon

B.
i.
No of 5th formers that buy food outside of school grounds: 67
students
Percentage 5th formers that buy at Red Tent: 55%
No. of students that buy at Red Tent = 55% of 67
= 37 students
Price at Canada Dry, guzzler and XL energy drink is sold
respectively
= $300, $200 & $200
Total amount of money made for the sale = 37*($300+$200+
$200)
= 37*$700
= $25,900
Answer: $25,900

ii.
No. of 5th formers that buy food outside of school grounds: 67
students
Percentage of 5th formers that buy at Beacon Café: 35%
No. of students that buy at Beacon Café = 35% of 67
. = 23 students
Price at Canada Dry, guzzler and XL energy drink is sold
respectively
= $200, $220 & $260
Total amount of money made for the sale = 23*($200+$220+
$260)
= 23*$680

7|Page
= $15,640
Answer: $15,640

C.
No. Of students that buy at Beacon Café: 23 students
Price of food, pizza, juice, cassava and egg ball respectively
= $500, $220, $200, $120 & $120
Value of 5% discount on the total items = 5% of $1,160
= $58
Discounted price of fried-rice = $1,160 - $58
= $1,102
Total amount of money earned (discount included) = 23 * $1,102
= $25,346
Answer: $25,346

D.
Percentage 5th formers that buy at Red Tent: 55%
No. of students that buy at Red Tent = 37 students
Price at which Food is sold at Red Tent: $500
Total amount of money made from the sale = $18,500
Total money made if 55% student buy the food at $600 = $600 *
37
=
$22,200

8|Page
Profit from the $600 sale compared to the $500 sale = $22,200 -
$18,500

= $3,700

Answer: $3,700

E.
 Previous amount earned when the price of food was $500
with 23 students buying at Beacon = 37*$500
= $18,500

 Number of students that converted to Beacon when the price

dropped to $460 = 20% of 67 students
= 13 students
 Total number of students who now buy food from Beacon
= 23+13
= 36 students

 Total number of students who now buy food from Red Tent
= 37–13
= 24 students

 Total amount made before Red Tent lost customers =

$18,500
 Total amount made before Beacon gain customers =
$11,500

i. Total amount made before Red Tent lost customers =

$18,500
Total amount made after the loss of customers =
24*$500

9|Page
= $12,000
Answer = $12,000

ii. Total amount made before Beacon gain customers =

$11,500
Total amount made when priced dropped to $460 =
36*$460

= $16,560
Profit made after price dropped = $16,560 - $11,500
= $5,060
Answer = $5,060

F.
Red Tent’s Simple Interest = (Principle * Annual Rate) * Time
in years
= ($2,600,000 * 18%)* 5
= $468,000 * 5
= $2,340,000
Answer: $2,340,000
