Project Title:
An analysis of possible business sale strategies taken
by two competing foods shops.
2|Page
Introduction:
Curiosity has struck the creators of this SBA and urges them
to study the effects of students on the sales, prices, etcetera
on two food businesses. This SBA contains a series of real-
world mathematical applications in finding the solutions to
possible scenarios formed by the creators of the SBA. We
hope that we have been able to gather enough valid data to
base our investigations to create a valuable SBA.
Across the road of The Bishops’ High School, there are two
“shops” that sell food; Beacon Café and a small joint
normally referred to as ‘The Red Tent’. 90% of 5 th Form
Students of The Bishops’ High School purchase common food
items and drinks from these places during their lunch period.
Our group will calculate certain sales strategies that might
be taken by these “shops”.

METHODOLOGY
The researchers observed the businesses and carried multiple
interviews with the fifth form students. This was done in order to
obtain valuable data to answer the following questions in order to
understand various sale strategies.
b) If 55% of 5th formers buy from Red Tent and 35% from
Beacon Café, how much money would each food shop make
if each person were to buy 3 common drink items each.
5|Page
A.
i. Price of Beacon’s Juice = $200
Price of Red Tent’s Juice = -$100
The difference of the two = $100
6|Page
B.
i.
No of 5th formers that buy food outside of school grounds: 67
students
Percentage 5th formers that buy at Red Tent: 55%
No. of students that buy at Red Tent = 55% of 67
= 37 students
Price at Canada Dry, guzzler and XL energy drink is sold
respectively
= $300, $200 & $200
Total amount of money made for the sale = 37*($300+$200+
$200)
= 37*$700
= $25,900
Answer: $25,900
ii.
No. of 5th formers that buy food outside of school grounds: 67
students
Percentage of 5th formers that buy at Beacon Café: 35%
No. of students that buy at Beacon Café = 35% of 67
. = 23 students
Price at Canada Dry, guzzler and XL energy drink is sold
respectively
= $200, $220 & $260
Total amount of money made for the sale = 23*($200+$220+
$260)
= 23*$680
7|Page
= $15,640
Answer: $15,640
C.
No. Of students that buy at Beacon Café: 23 students
Price of food, pizza, juice, cassava and egg ball respectively
= $500, $220, $200, $120 & $120
Value of 5% discount on the total items = 5% of $1,160
= $58
Discounted price of fried-rice = $1,160 - $58
= $1,102
Total amount of money earned (discount included) = 23 * $1,102
= $25,346
Answer: $25,346
D.
Percentage 5th formers that buy at Red Tent: 55%
No. of students that buy at Red Tent = 37 students
Price at which Food is sold at Red Tent: $500
Total amount of money made from the sale = $18,500
Total money made if 55% student buy the food at $600 = $600 *
37
=
$22,200
8|Page
Profit from the $600 sale compared to the $500 sale = $22,200 -
$18,500
= $3,700
Answer: $3,700
E.
Previous amount earned when the price of food was $500
with 23 students buying at Beacon = 37*$500
= $18,500
Total number of students who now buy food from Red Tent
= 37–13
= 24 students
9|Page
= $12,000
Answer = $12,000
= $16,560
Profit made after price dropped = $16,560 - $11,500
= $5,060
Answer = $5,060
F.
Red Tent’s Simple Interest = (Principle * Annual Rate) * Time
in years
= ($2,600,000 * 18%)* 5
= $468,000 * 5
= $2,340,000
Answer: $2,340,000
