A. Read the following text about the ozone layer. Write T if the statement is True and F if it is False.

Ozone is a gas in the atmosphere that protects the earth from the sun’s powerful ultraviolet
rays. It is the earth’s blanket of protection. This is the ozone layer. Over the last twenty-five years
something has been breaking down the protective ozone layer. What could be the cause?
Scientists discovered that chemical compounds caleed CFCs destroy ozone faster than it could
be replaced. These CFCs could be found in aerosol sprays and refrigerators.
An actual “ozone hole” was discovered over the Antarctic in the early 1980s. scientists insisted
that the world takes stronger steps protect the ozone layer. The ozone layer will recover over time if
we all do our part to protect it. You want to preserve the environment, don’t you? Let us do our part
before it’s too late! We can make a difference! Save the ozone layer! Save the earth! Will you join
the fight?

The Flower of Love

Once there was a chieftain who had a beautiful daughter named Liwayway. One day
Liwayway went into the woods to gather fruits and flowers but unfortunately lost her way. She
became unconscious when a wild bear ran after her. When she awoke, she saw a young man
bending over her. He wasthe son of another chieftain. When they parted, each one knew they
were in love with one another.
One day the young man was going away to fight the white men who had invaded their
land. The lovers promised never to forget each other by saying “Sumpa Kita”. But the warrior
never came back. In sorrow, the maiden killed herself. Sometimes later, shrubs with fragrant
flower grew on her grave. People believed that Liwayway’s love grew and bloomed. It became a
custom for young lovers after that to exchange garlands of these flowers as token of their
faithful love. They whispered “I promise” (Sumpa kita) to each other. In time the flowers became
known as sampaguita. It is adopted as our national flower because of its fragrance and
simplicity.
