Introductory Message

Welcome to Communication Skills (English) – ALS A&E Junior High School


Level!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the


Schools Division of ___ and DepEd Regional __________ through the Curriculum and
Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning
facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the ALS K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed


to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using
the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Communication Skills-English Activity Sheet will help you facilitate


the teaching-learning activities specified in each Individual Learning Agreement
(ILA) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Communication Skills-English Activity Sheet is developed to help you


continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities
and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule

I. Learning Competency

Use skimming and scanning to: locate specific information from various
materials, determine the text type and determine key ideas (LS1CS/EN-R-PSD-
LE/JHS-54)

II. Background information for learners

Reading is fun. It allows you to know what you need to know. It takes you to
places you’ve never been and let you meet different people at the comforts of your
home. Through reading you get to travel and see the wonders of the world. Reading
is an instrument that gives you the opportunity to enhance other skills. By
becoming a better reader, you get to be a better speaker because it is much the
same as having a conversation with the author.

Skimming Scanning
 Fast reading  Reading technique used when you
 Get main idea not all details want to locate a single fact or specific
 Must leave out parts bit of information without reading
 May leave out ½ to 3/5 paragraph once every word
you have the main idea of the  e.g. scan TV listing in paper to find
paragraph time to show
 Comprehension is lower, try to  phone directory when you want to see
comprehend as much as you can while a show
reading at an average speed  fast way to find information
 Comprehend 50% of what you are  must be accurate in terms of finding a
reading specific Tv show or Phone number
 Twice as fast  often done with materials that you
 Usually done with material you know know something about
nothing about
 *note as speed increases,
comprehension decreases

Activity 1

Directions: Read the statements carefully and check the appropriate column.

Scanning Skimming
1. Searching through Google the list or example of tropical
fruits.
2. Looking up the word “Eczema” in the dictionary.
3. Looking at the magazine to check the article
4. Scrolling through Facebook to see what’s popular or
trending.
5. Searching Spotify for Christmas in our Heart song.

Activity 2

Directions: Read and understand the text carefully. Answer the questions that
follow.

As of 4 PM, November
29, 2021, the Department of
Health has recorded 665
additional cases of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, 993 were cured
and 141 died.

Of the total number


of recorded cases in the
country, 0.6% (16,289) were
active cases, 97.7%
(2,767,585) were cured, and
1.71% (48,501) died.

According to the
latest report, 2 laboratories
were not operational on
November 27, 2021 while
there were 3 laboratories that
failed to submit data to the
COVID-19 Document
Repository System (CDRS). Based on data over the past 14 days, the contribution
of these 5 labs was approximately 0.3% in all samples tested and 0.5% in all
positive individuals.
