check. When you hear this sound “TING!”, it means
that you answered it correctly, and if not, the sound
would be like this, “ENGK”.
Very good! How about the statement number 2? Sir! The underline word is swimming, and my answer is
gerund.
Great! Who would like to answer statement number 3? Sir! The underlined word is to watched, and my answer
is infinitives.
5
Very good! The activity that you have done has
something to do with our lesson today because our
topic is all about gerunds and infinitives, and at the
same time, the use and functions of both verbals.
Very good! How about the others? Sir! I want to eat every day.
6
Very good! Gerunds and Infinitives are very common
in the English Language, they can be used in many
situations. Sometimes, you may use an infinitive and
a gerund. There are some instances where you have to
choose between them.
But we need to be careful in using these verbals;
gerunds and infinitives. We need to follow some
important rules when to use these verbals, but we will
just be focusing on two rules. Are we clear? Yes, Sir!
Who would like to read the rule number 1? Rule 1. Gerunds and infinitive can be used as a subject of
a sentence.
Thank you. To further elaborate rule number 1, who
would like to read the following examples.
Examples:
1. Playing online games is one of my stress-free times.
2. Swimming can be very good to your health.
3. Studying always beforehand will make your grades
high.
Thank you. The gerunds in bold are part of the
sentence subjects—playing, swimming, and studying.
But they are not the main verb (a word that states
action) in the sentence. Nonetheless, they are used as,
what? Sir! They are used as nouns.
7
playing is the subject which explains that one of his
stress-free times is playing online games. Do you
understand, Class?
How about second sentence, who would like to try? Yes, Sir!
Sir! I think that the gerund in the sentence is
“swimming”, and it is used as a subject in which it
supports the details that it can be very good to your health
when you swim.
Exactly, therefore, it explains in rule number 1 that not
all verbs are distinguished as is, gerund’s function is
nouns, or even be adjectives. Do you follow, class? Yes, Sir!
How do you say so? It becomes the subject because even if it is the word “to
swim” is a verb, infinitive can function as noun, adjective
or adverb.
8
E. Discussing new concepts Great! On the latter note, rule number 2 opposes to
and rule 1. Who would like to read?
practicing new skills # 2 Sir! Rule 2. Gerund and infinitives used as objects in the
sentence.
Both gerunds and infinitives can be used as object of
the sentence. Who would like to read the following
examples? Sir!
Examples:
a. I enjoy watching Netflix.
b. Yesterday, I decided to watch Netflix.
9
And in that case, the object is WATCHING because it
is the word acted by the subject. Do you understand? Yes, Sir!

to Formative Assessment lesson that I have inculcated to you. It is entitled
“TEST YOUR WITS!”

GERUND AS A SUBJECT
10

Thank you.
Are the instructions clear? Yes, Sir!
G. Finding practical With the lessons enunciated to you, what do you think
applications of is the relevance of the lesson to your day-to-day basis? Sir, may I?
concepts and skills in daily I could relate the lesson to the day-to-day basis by means
living of communicating with other people if you know how to
use both gerund and infinitives interchangeably, we could
be able to address what we wanted to tell.
Great idea!
Who else would like to try? Sir!
