A. Reviewing previous lesson To formally start our session this morning, may I
or presenting the new request everyone to rise for our prayer? Sir!
lesson
(Review) Who would like to lead? Amen.

You may proceed.

Thank you. Good morning, Class! Good morning, Sir! Good morning, classmates! Good
morning!

Before you take your seats, I want you to pick all the
pieces of paper under your chair.
Make your row straight and have your chairs properly
aligned.

Thank you. You may now take your seat. Thank you, Sir!

All right. Who’s absent today? None, Sir!

Perfect! Yes, Sir.

In order to keep your learning on track and be guided,

I want you to read the classroom rules that I have
2
constructed, to avoid unnecessary behaviors in the
process. CLASSROOM RULES
1. Allow everyone a chance to speak.
2. Listen respectfully and actively.
3. Criticize ideas, not individuals.
4. If you have queries or questions, directly ask your
teacher, not your seatmate, by raising your hands.
5. Don’t talk unless I told you to do so.

Thank you! To assess if you can still remember the

topic that I discussed to you last meeting, Kyle! What
was the lesson all about? Sir! Last meeting, we discussed about subject and object.

Very good! If that so, what is the difference between

subject and object? Sir! When we say subject, it is the person or thing doing
the action or something while the object is the word acted
upon by the verb or preposition.
Impressive! Today, new learnings will be tacked into
your mind, but there are things that you need to
consider.

B. Establishing a purpose for As we go along with the new lesson that I will be
the discussing, you should be informed of goals that we
lesson should achieve at the end of the learning-teaching
(Presentation of process,
Objectives)
Who would like to read our objectives for today’s
lesson?
Okay. Kindly read the objective, please! Sir!

Go ahead! At the end of 50 minutes lesson, the learner should be

able to do the following:

3
a. Identify difference between the gerund and
infinitives in the sentence;
b. Construct a sentence indicating the use of
gerund as a subject and infinitives as an
object; and
c. Value the importance of using gerund in the
day-to-day basis.
And those are the objectives that you should be able to
meet after the discussion.

C. Presenting In order to at least provide you with a glimpse of our

examples/instances of the topic today, we will be having an activity. This activity
new lesson is entitled “CLASSIFY, WHICH IS WHICH!”.
(Motivation)
For you to be guided, who would like to read the
directions? Sir!

Yes, Dale. Proceed. Directions:

In ¼ sheet of paper, identify whether the underlined
words or phrases used in the sentence is gerund or
infinitives.

1. Playing online games is one of my stress-free

times.
2. Swimming can be very good to your health.
3. Yesterday, I decided to watched Netflix.
4. Sir Quinto is the cooperating teacher of my
student-teachers.
5. I used to play the guitar every day.

You have 3 minutes to conduct this activity. You may

start now.

4
Times Up! Exchange papers with your seatmate, let us
check. When you hear this sound “TING!”, it means
that you answered it correctly, and if not, the sound
would be like this, “ENGK”.

Okay, class. Eyes on the board, who would like to

answer statement number 1? You have to state the
underlined word first and then, your answer. Sir! The underlined word is playing, and the answer is
gerund.

Very good! How about the statement number 2? Sir! The underline word is swimming, and my answer is
gerund.

Great! Who would like to answer statement number 3? Sir! The underlined word is to watched, and my answer
is infinitives.

Very good! Statement number 4, who wants to

answer? Sir!

Yes, please! The underlined word is cooperating, and my answer is

gerund.
And for the last number?
Proceed. Sir!
The underlined word is to play, and my answer is
infinitives.
Very good! A job well done, class! Give yourselves a
legendary clap! And it goes like this, 1-2-3! 1-2-3!
Legendary! 1-2-3! 1-2-3! Legendary!

Okay. Based on the activity that you have done, what

do you think is our lesson today? Sir! I think, our lesson today is about gerunds and
infinitives.

5
Very good! The activity that you have done has
something to do with our lesson today because our
topic is all about gerunds and infinitives, and at the
same time, the use and functions of both verbals.

D. Discussing new concepts Okay. Before we proceed on discussing the lesson, I

and would like to ask you class. What do you love doing
practicing new skills #1 in your free time? Sir! Watching movies.
(Presentation of the lesson)
What else? Helping my mother in doing household chores.

How about the others? Sir! Playing mobile games.

What else? Going to SM.

Impressive! These words that you have uttered are all

examples of gerunds because gerund’s distinct feature
is that it ends in -ing form. Now, what if I ask you want
you want to do every day? What would you like to do? Sir! Play the guitar.

Farheen said that he wanted to play the guitar. Who

else? Sir!
I want to read comic books.

Very good! How about the others? Sir! I want to eat every day.

Great! These are all hobbies, aren’t they? Yes, Sir!

But we used infinitives to describe them. What is the

term being used to describe those things that you have
mentioned? Sir! It is the word “to”.

6
Very good! Gerunds and Infinitives are very common
in the English Language, they can be used in many
situations. Sometimes, you may use an infinitive and
a gerund. There are some instances where you have to
choose between them.
But we need to be careful in using these verbals;
gerunds and infinitives. We need to follow some
important rules when to use these verbals, but we will
just be focusing on two rules. Are we clear? Yes, Sir!

Who would like to read the rule number 1? Rule 1. Gerunds and infinitive can be used as a subject of
a sentence.
Thank you. To further elaborate rule number 1, who
would like to read the following examples.
Examples:
1. Playing online games is one of my stress-free times.
2. Swimming can be very good to your health.
3. Studying always beforehand will make your grades
high.
Thank you. The gerunds in bold are part of the
sentence subjects—playing, swimming, and studying.
But they are not the main verb (a word that states
action) in the sentence. Nonetheless, they are used as,
what? Sir! They are used as nouns.

To comprehensively discuss this rule number 1, let us

look at the following examples. Sir!
Examples:
a. Playing online games is one of my stress-free
times.
b. Swimming can be very good to your health.
In example A, the word “playing” is the gerund in the
sentence which is used as a noun. On this sentence,

7
playing is the subject which explains that one of his
stress-free times is playing online games. Do you
understand, Class?
How about second sentence, who would like to try? Yes, Sir!
Sir! I think that the gerund in the sentence is
“swimming”, and it is used as a subject in which it
supports the details that it can be very good to your health
when you swim.
Exactly, therefore, it explains in rule number 1 that not
all verbs are distinguished as is, gerund’s function is
nouns, or even be adjectives. Do you follow, class? Yes, Sir!

What if the sentence would be like this?

“To swim in the sea may be dangerous.”
Is the sentence still addresses gerund? No, Sir! It is already infinitives.

What is your indication? The word “to”.

Perfect! If the sentence has an indication of “to”, it is

automatically under infinitive. In line with rule
number 1, infinitives can also be used as a noun or a
subject of the sentence. Take a look at the example. “To swim in the sea may be dangerous.”

What is the subject in the sentence? Sir! To swim.

How do you say so? It becomes the subject because even if it is the word “to
swim” is a verb, infinitive can function as noun, adjective
or adverb.

Exactly! Therefore, in reference to rule number 1,

even if the gerund and infinitives are verbs, they can
be used as a noun, and adjective. Are we clear? Yes, Sir!

8
E. Discussing new concepts Great! On the latter note, rule number 2 opposes to
and rule 1. Who would like to read?
practicing new skills # 2 Sir! Rule 2. Gerund and infinitives used as objects in the
sentence.
Both gerunds and infinitives can be used as object of
the sentence. Who would like to read the following
examples? Sir!
Examples:
a. I enjoy watching Netflix.
b. Yesterday, I decided to watch Netflix.

Both sentences are correct, but one states an infinitive

as the object and the other has a gerund as an object. What is the difference, Sir?

It is the verb that precedes (come before) the object.

Some verbs require a gerund and otherwise, requires
an infinitive.

In the above examples, we can see that the formula is:

a. “ENJOY” + GERUND.
b. “DECIDED” + INFINITIVE.

Do you think it is the right formula? No, Sir!

Okay. From the given examples, what is the verb in

the sentence? It is the word “watch”, Sir.

Very good! In order to identify if the word is gerund,

if it has? What?
If it has -ing form at the end of the word.
Therefore, in example A, ask yourself, what did he
enjoy? Expectedly, he enjoyed watching Netflix.

9
And in that case, the object is WATCHING because it
is the word acted by the subject. Do you understand? Yes, Sir!

How about the second example? Why is it stated that

the form would be “DECIDED” + INFINITIVE?
What is the indication? Sir! It is the word “to.”

Exactly! If the gerund has an indication of -ing form,

in other sense, infinitive has also hint which is the
word “to”. Do you understand? Yes, Sir!

Always keep in mind that the function of gerund and

infinitives can be used interchangeably. It could be a Yes, Sir!
subject and an object in the sentence. Do you
understand?

In order to solidify the learnings, you have earned in

today’s lesson, we will be having an activity. Yes, Sir!

use both gerund and infinitives interchangeably, we could
be able to address what we wanted to tell.
Great idea!
Who else would like to try? Sir!
