Brianna Robinson's presentation covers the topics of social anxiety, anxiety in general, and the effects of music. She discusses how social anxiety affects people and can prevent them from living to their full potential. Brianna then explores what anxiety is and provides survey results showing that music impacts mood. Her research found that music reduces stress and activates different areas of the brain. For her junior project, Brianna wrote songs and created a video showing how music expresses her feelings and inspires others. She concludes by emphasizing the importance of using music to naturally calm the mind.

Slide One:

Hello! I am Brianna Robinson. Obviously I combined my junior and 2020 projects. My

topic has varied multiple times and so I will be covering a little bit of social anxiety and
then focus more on anxiety as a whole and stress as the presentation proceeds.

Slide Two:
Just to clarify something before I begin, everyone has gotten anxious before in their
lives whether it is for a test grade or for an audition/interview.
But social anxiety can be a little more extreme since it begins between 8 and 15 years
old on average for 75% of people who have it.

Slide Three:

To avoid any social or performing activities out of fear of judgement and embarrassment
from peers. Also it could prevent a person from living to the fullest of their ability
because they’re afraid of being evaluated negatively. This could have been caused from
the environment you were raised in whether it be school or at home.

Slide Four:

Social Anxiety is one of the most common mental “disorders” affecting more than 15
million American adults

More than one third of people who have it are silent about it for up to 10 years on
average

For 75% of patients it starts at a young age, so is there a way to help yourself at an
early age to avoid future symptoms?

Slide Five:
Group therapy -
Helps get your voice heard

Encourages group activities

May influence a person to want to speak up more

Acting -

Focuses on the character you are portraying and not focused completely on yourself

It helps a person connect externally to others

Acting helps you focus on the now so you don’t anticipate the future

It connects to a different part of your mind

Slide Six:

Social Anxiety was my original topic, but for my junior project I eventually decided to
take a different direction. Now Onto My Junior Project Overall Topic:

What is anxiety exactly?

Definition: A consistent feeling of exaggerated worry or fear about things in everyday

situations! Could be over school, tests, social drama, overthinking! There could be
multiple reasons!

Slide Seven:

These are graphs of surveys that I put together. I wanted to see what ways music
affected people already before I began my project.

Slide Eight:
As you may have noticed, what I had hoped for came true. I was hoping that music
made an impact on others like it has done for me.

Slide Nine:

- I wish to explore the mental effects and impacts of simply listening to music!
- Data was from a poll answered by 15 random teens from clayton valley charter
high school
- Music is played in stores, restaurants, theme parks, etc. But, why is it
everywhere and why does it need to be emphasized?

Slide Ten:

Here Are The Facts, I decided to begin with research and then talk more about my
project itself later in the presentation

- A new study shows that music relieves up to 65% of stress or anxiety

Slide Eleven:

From research I gathered scientifically, it claimed:

- “Music helps reduce pain by activating sensory pathways that compete with pain
pathways in the brain, stimulating emotional responses, and engaging cognitive
attention. Because the music is competing with the pain pathways in the brain, it
appears to help to take the focus away from pain.”
Slide Twelve:

- When playing an instrument or simply listening to music, it activates your whole

brain due to the multiple dynamics music involves. This can improve the way you
think, feel, and behave.

According to a website found in my research, these were the corresponding

triggers in the brain for music from sciencenordic.com:

Slide Thirteen:

- “processing of musical pulse activates motor areas in the brain, supporting the
idea that music and movement are closely intertwined”
- “Limbic areas of the brain, known to be associated with emotions, were found to
be involved in rhythm and tonality processing”
- “processing of timbre was
associated with
mind-wandering and
creativity.”

Slide Fourteen:
- Disney and Pixar use music to encapsulate memory to evoke emotion from the
viewers of movies or even in theme parks!

Slide Fifteen:

For my Junior Project, I decided that I was going to write music

At first I was going to do a study where I would play a soundtrack of well known
melodies and measure heart rates before and after, but due to quarantine, I just
changed it up a little bit.
Slide Sixteen:

What I knew I could do was write music. After having limited access to public areas and
friends, I knew that I had music with me; therefore, I was still capable of showing how
music affects me at least.

Slide Seventeen:

I already had written music before…

I noticed that I wrote music best when I felt stressed or anxious. It was almost like
expressing myself through a whole different medium. So, for my project I decided to
take the songs I wrote and put it to a video of things that correspond to my happiness. I
am hoping that it inspires people to open up about stresses and anxieties using
expression. This expression can be used in writing songs like what I did, writing a story
or in a journal, or painting!

Slide Eighteen:

Therefore, I had to take the songs I had written and learn how to put them on my itunes.
I created a playlist and was easily able to just import them to my video editor app. I
spent about a week working on the project itself to try and edit the video and put it
together.

Slide Nineteen:

Present It: Here’s my video, I would play it for ya’ll but it’s about 12 minutes long so I
have two different ways to get to it to watch it since it is my art piece. Either click the
direct youtube link or go to my website under the My Junior Project Tab at the top.

Slide Twenty:
To Conclude:

Looking back on my letter of intent and my project proposal, I have kept pretty true to
what I wish to convey about music. Music has always been a companion for me when I
am feeling low or stressed about large amounts of work or other social problems. I wish
to spread the importance of music and its natural uses when playing an instrument and
singing and how it naturally calms you. That is such a simple way to easily soothe one’s
messy mind!
