Reading
Reading is a thinking process. Effective readers know
that when they read, what
they read is supposed to make sense. They monitor
their understanding, and when they
lose the meaning of what they are reading, they often
unconsciously select and use a
reading strategy (such as rereading or asking
questions) that will help them reconnect
with the meaning of the text
Reading
Not only do good reading skills benefit you academically, they are
also a skill required for lifelong success. Reading develops
vocabulary, increases attention span, and promotes stronger
analytical thinking.
By learning to make reading fun, you are more likely to develop a
love of reading, encouraging better reading habits and making
learning easier

1. demonstrate understanding of the different reading styles (scanning,
skimming, speed reading, intensive reading and extensive reading;
2. execute a simple reading activity applying the different reading styles on

Reading skills enable readers to
turn writing into meaning and
achieve the goals
of independence,
comprehension, and fluency.
As we develop our skills in reading, the process often
becomes more challenging. We are introduced to new
vocabulary and more complex sentence structure. As
schooling progresses however, we are led to consider range of
perspectives, or ways of looking at a topic, rather than just
one. We learn to compare these perspectives and begin to form
opinions about them.
Can you guess the reading style?
1. Sevi is happily reading his contract in Goin’
bulilit since he is a child actor.
2. Bettina is reading her favorite magazine.
3. Fiona is busy checking an airplane schedule.
4. Alhem is silently reading his favorite novel
.5. Andrew is trying to test on how fast he can finish
the story that he is reading.
Reading is a method of
communication that enables a
person to turn writing into
meaning.
Reading skills are specific
abilities which enable a reader
to:
• read the written form as meaningful
language.
• read anything written with independence,
comprehension, and fluency, and
• mentally interact with message.
The Reading
Styles
Skimming
– used to understand the “gist” or main idea.
Run your eyes over the text, noting important
information. It’s not essential to understand
each word when skimming
Skimming
Examples
• The Newspaper (quickly to get the general news of
the day)
• Magazines (quickly to discover which articles you
would like to read in more detail.
• Business and Travel Brochures (quickly to get
informed)
Scanning

is used to find a particular piece of information. Run

your eyes over the text
looking for the specific piece of information you
need.
Scanning

Examples:
• The “What’s on TV” section of your newspaper.
• A train / airplane schedule.
Speed Reading
– is a skill that almost seems like a superpower. The
ability to quickly
read and comprehend books, articles and other
written materials. How well you
comprehend what you read is determined by your
reading speed, the breadth of your
vocabulary, and your degree of familiarity with the
subject matter.
Speed Reading

How to calculate reading speed?

• Read a part of a book in one minute.
• Count the number of the words you have read.
Speed Reading
Now you can see a complete categorization based on the
results you get from
calculating reading speed using the formula:
✓ If your reading speed is less than 100 wpm, you are
very slow.
✓ If your reading speed is between 100 and 200 wpm, you
are weak and slow.
Speed Reading
✓ If your reading speed is between 200 and 300 wpm, you
are at a moderate
level.
✓ If your reading speed is between 300 and 400 wpm, you
are a good speed
reader.
✓ If your reading speed is between 400 and 700 wpm, you
are at a great level.
✓ If your reading speed is more than 700 wpm,
congratulations! you are a
professional!
Extensive Reading

– is used to obtain a general understanding of a subject and

includes
reading longer texts for pleasure, as well as business
books.
Extensive Reading

Example of Extensive Reading:

• A novel you read before going to bed.
Intensive Reading

– is used on shorter texts in order to extract specific

information. It includes very close accurate reading for
detail. In this case, it is important that you
understand each word, number or fact.
Intensive Reading

Example of Intensive Reading:

• A contract
• Insurance policy
Thank you!
Understand the author's
writing purpose.
Reading a text critically requires that you ask questions
about the writer’s authority and agenda. You may need to
put yourself in the author’s shoes and recognize that
those shoes fit a certain way of thinking.
Prepare to read with an
open mind.
Critical readers seek knowledge; they do not
"rewrite" a work to suit their own personalities. Your
task as an enlightened critical reader is to read what
is on the page, giving the writer a fair chance to
develop ideas and allowing yourself to reflect
thoughtfully and objectively
on the text.
