Annealing of Polymers, Alloys, Composites), Part 3, 2020-1

The document discusses annealing temperatures for various polymers like PET, PS, and PET/PS blends. Annealing is important as it erases internal stresses and reduces susceptibility to fracture in polymers. The annealing temperatures provided are meant to be just below or above the glass transition temperature for each material to optimize properties like hardness and strength.

Understanding the engineering polymers.

(annealing of polymers and composites), Part

3 - BONUS
Date: 14th 13, May Student: Juan Nicolás Contreras Murcia
• Access to the web page http://www.substech.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?
id=annealing_of_plastics, and read carefully the content about annealing of polymers. Also,
please consider figure 1 as an example for polyethyleneterephtlate (PET) and polystyrene
(PS) samples under DSC test.

Figure 1 Side (a): DSC scans of PET and PS; Side (b) DSC scan of PET/PS blend for bottles blowing
(retrieved from Wellen R. (2014), Materials Research, Vol 17(6), pp.:1620-1627)

Please locate over the figure 1 the most common temperature range (or value) for
anneal each polymer, that mention the article provided earlier.
Annealing temperature range for PET: _177_ °C because is consider thermo plastic son
we must above the glass transition
Annealing temperature range for PS: _77_ °C Because is amorphus, so must anneal
nearly the glass transition
Annealing temperature range for PET/PS: _70_ °C Nearly below to the glass transition to
get more rigity and hardness
Why it’s important to anneal?: erase (minimize) internal stress, reduce susceptibility to
fracture.
It's important to anneal to change the properties, as hardness ductility and else
deppending if it's thermoplastic or thermoset, those properties can increase or dicreasse
(also depend the structure) for be more usefull in a requierment and it does not
represent an economic problem because is cheap

• According with the text provided in the web page suggested, is possible to affirm that
the statement about annealing is either wrong or false?, Please use additional
information from the site: https://www.ptonline.com/articles/materials-thermoplastic-
urethanes-why-annealing-makes-a-big-difference to complement your analysis. Finally,
say where could be the most convenient annealing temperatures to anneal PET and PS?,
please draw (again) on the plot provided your own temperature range or value for PET,
PS and the new mixture PET/PS. Motivate your explanation?

Annealing temperature range for PET: _115_°C, because is far over te glass transition
Annealing temperature range for PS: _77_°C, because is the nearest to te glass transition
Annealing temperature range for PET/PS: _70_°C, because is nearly under glass
transition
And analize carefully the next table (please read the table caption for acronyms
understanding). This experiences of annealing were developed on polypropylene (PP)
homopolymer (HPP, PP alone), and a copolymer (blocks of other polymer additional to
PP inside the molecular structure)

parentheses. Materials are designated as homopolymer (HPP) or copolymer (CPP) with 0 or 10%
relaxation and 110° or 130°C annealing temperature. (data retrieved and adapted from:

• Using the table analysis and your personal research, list the main goals of annealing in
polymers.

• Anneal can change the properties in function of the structure of a material, if it's
amorphus or not
• In this case the material are more rubbery and less strong
• We can hipotezise that this materials are thermoplastic
• The change in tensile strength and elongation in function of temperature is
directly proportional for the first and inverse proptotional for the second
• (1/10 point) Annealing in polymers is?...(MAIN ISSUES). Please provide a discussion
between two comic characters (again!) use the tool available in
