The document proposes modifying face mask filters by integrating herbs with antiviral properties to improve the mask's ability to filter out viruses like COVID-19. It discusses how the pandemic has impacted health systems and economies. The study aims to develop an innovative face mask that incorporates the compound andrographolide, which is extracted from the herb Andrographis paniculata and has been shown to have antiviral effects. The methodology describes extracting andrographolide then incorporating it into face mask filters using electrospinning to produce fibers small enough to effectively filter out viruses.

Proposal Title: Modifying of face mask filter via integrating herbs with antiviral or phytocompound.
Proponents: Bunagan, Diana C.
RATIONALE
Covid-19 has unleashed widespread shock globally, as it is declared as pandemic by World Health Organization. The clinical
health systems were struggling to respond to the surge and the economics of most countries were slowly dying as its
manpower productivity became limited and restricted from participation.
The government’s current action to the said pandemic was via providing local testing kits, closing walls from foreign
immigrants, utilizing protocols such as lockdowns and quarantine, providing facilities to those infected persons and persons
under investigation, and in spite of those efforts, it weren’t enough to fight the pandemic, if there’s still movements and
transactions face to face, contamination and transmission are inevitable. Since vaccines are months away or even years away
to be available for everyone, the best chance for us is to secure our health, via wearing personal protective equipment such as
mask. The aim of this study is to research of potential aid to improve the filter ability of face mask in order to filter out the virus
and potentially weakening the effects of virus.
RELATED LITERATURE
As described by WHO (2020), The novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-CoV-2 which is highly
contagious via human transmission. Corona viruses mostly affect respiratory system, The COVID-19 is known to show
symptoms slowly over an incubation period of around 2 weeks. During this time, the virus replicates (Chan et al., 2020b)
which made a general symptom such as fever, cough, dyspnea, and lesion in the lungs (Huang et al., 2020). It has been also
found that SARS-CoV-2 shares sequence homology with the SARS CoV, a virus identified in 2003 from southern China,
despite of its similarity to SARS-CoV, its transmission efficiency and diagnostic methods are rather different. (Gorbalenya,
2020)
Number of cases of infected and deaths are drastically increasing day by day, flattening the curve is somehow unreachable.
According to WHO covid-19 situation, as of May 13, 2020, 4,139,794 is the confirmed cases while 285,328 is the confirmed
death. The disease can spread and infect hundreds of people in just small tiny droplets that was ejected when speaking,
coughing, or sneezing hence social distancing and wearing proper PPEs are our primary preventive measures. Thus,
modifying or improving our PPES such as the facial mask would be a great contributor on preventing the said virus to be
spread out.
Integrating phytocompound or compound with antiviral properties from herbs to the current available face mask would
somehow promising to decrease the future infection of covid-19. According to Roy et al. (2009), Andrographis paniculate
(Serpentine) is a promising herb since it displayed antimicrobial activities against all the nine human pathogens they tested.
Additionally, it has been experimentally verified to have a wide range of bioactive properties such as anti-retroviral, anti-
oxidative, anti-cancer, anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-hypertension, and anti-diabetic. Lee et
al. (2018). Furthermore, from the study by Enmozhi S. K et al. (2020) shows some plant molecules which are studied to inhibit
the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 failed to prove their binding score when compared with the Andrographolide the main
compound of andrographis paniculata.
OBJECTIVE
The study aims:
To develop potential innovation of face mask to control further spread of Covid-19 virus via incorporating herbs compound to
currently available mask.
METHODOLOGY
The extraction and purification method of andrographolide used was the method employed by Fujita et al. (1984, p. 2117). 5
kg of dried A. paniculata leaves were extracted with 156 L of methanol for 4 days at room temperature. The extract was then
concentrated in vacuo to about 7 L, and 290 g of active charcoal was added with constant stirring. After standing for 1 day, the
charcoal was filtered off and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. White crystals were precipitated out and collected by
simple filtration. Now, the recovered charcoal was refluxed with 1.75 L of methanol for 2 hours. On removal of the charcoal by
filtration, the resulting filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to about 0.5 L, which yielded white crystals. The crystals were
combined and recrystallized from methanol to afford pure andrographolide, after extraction of pure andrographolide it will be
administer to cotton fiber where electrospinning process takes place it uses electric force to draw charged threads of polymer
solutions or polymer melts up to fiber diameters ranging from micrometer to nanometer then incorporate the obtained fiber to
the facial mask. The integrated herb, andrographolide, will help to filter out or weaken the viruses via its antiviral properties.
