Assignment 2

EE462 Antenna Design & Microwave Engineering

Due Date: May, 22, 2020

Book: Element of Electromagnetics, 3rd edition, by Sadiku

Note: Solve the following problems from chapter 11 & 12 of your text book.

1. Example 11.4 (Smith chart)

2. Example 11.5 (Smith chart)
3. Practice Examples 11.5 (Smith chart)
4. Practice Examples 11.7 (Smith chart)
5. Given that Z = (30 + j40)Ω, Z = 50Ω, find the shortest l and Z so that the circuit
given below is matched. Assume that Z is real and lossless.

6. For FR4 substrate (𝜀 = 4.4) of height (ℎ = 1.6 𝑚𝑚), find the value of microstrip line
width (W) for the characteristic impedance (𝑍 ) of 100 Ω.
7. Calculate the inductance and capacitance values for a Butterworth low pass filter that has
a 3 dB bandwidth of 400 MHz and attenuation of 20 dB at 1 GHz. The filter is to be
connected to 50 Ω source and load impedances. How this filter can be realized using
microstrip transmission line? Final circuit diagram using microstrip line is required.
8. Example 12.1
9. Example 12.2
10. Example 12.3
11. We have a 3-port network that is completely characterized at some frequency ω by the
scattering matrix:
0 0.2 0.5
𝑺 = 0.5 0 0.3
0.5 0.5 0

A matched load is attached to port 2, while a short circuit has been placed at port 3:

a) Find the reflection coefficient at port 1.

b) Find the transmission coefficient from port 1 to port 2.
