LVL 5 Final Exam

This document is the question paper for a final exam in Microwave Engineering. It consists of two parts: Part A contains 3 compulsory questions on antenna matching using a Smith chart, even-odd mode analysis of a Wilkinson power divider circuit, and designing a third order Butterworth low-pass filter. Part B contains 5 questions asking students to characterize 2-port microwave networks, design a maximally flat low-pass filter, derive an expression for input impedance using a quarter wave transformer matching network, conditions for a reciprocal and lossless network, and determine return loss of a transmission line terminated by a given load impedance. The question paper provides relevant circuit diagrams and tables to aid in solving the problems.

B.Tech 5th Year, I Semester, Final Exam

MICROWAVE ENGINEERING
(Electrical Engineering Department)
Time: 2.5 hours Max. Marks: 60

Note: 1. This Question Paper consists of two parts (Part A and Part B).
2. Answering the questions in Part A is compulsory.
3. Answer any THREE Questions from Part B.
4. All questions carry equal marks.

PART –A
1. An antenna with an impedance of 60+𝑗40 Ω is to be matched to a 50 Ω lossless line with a shunt
stub tuner. Using a Smith chart determine:

(a) VSWR and Γ of the line

(b) The required stub admittance
(c) The distance between the stub and the antenna
(d) The stub length Fig. 1.

2. For the circuit shown in Fig.1, find the scattering parameters for the Wilkinson power divider.
Analyze the circuit using the even-odd mode analysis.

3. Using the insertion loss method, design a third order Butterworth low-pass filter with the following
specifications: 𝑅𝑠 = 𝑅𝐿 = 75 Ω, 𝑓𝑐 = 2 𝐺𝐻𝑧. Use Table. 1 if necessary.

PART –B
4. What are the different ways to characterize a 2-port microwave network? With the help of a block
diagram and equivalent circuit explain the impedance parameters.
5. Design a maximally flat low pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 2 GHz, impedance of 75 Ω ,
and at least 17 dB insertion loss at 3 GHz. Use Table.1 to construct the LC ladder network.

6. Using a quarter wave transformer as a matching network (as shown in Fig. 2.), drive an expression
for 𝑍1 . The input impedance is given by:

𝑍 +𝑗𝑍 tan(𝛽ℓ)
Z𝑖𝑛 = 𝑍1 𝑍𝐿+𝑗𝑍1 tan(𝛽ℓ) Fig. 2.
1 𝐿

7. What are the conditions for a reciprocal and lossless network? Explain for a two-port network.
8. A load impedance of 94.5 − 𝑗28 Ω terminates a transmission line of characteristic impedance
75 + 𝑗0.01 Ω. Determine its return loss.
