My name is Cowly Chinetseu , I am from Zimbabwe and I am 36 years old. I have a first degree in
Computer Science and a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management, 10 years’ experience
working as an ICT professional, and 3 years as a Microsoft Project management software trainer. I
enjoy watching sports like football and wrestling.

What is a verb?

A verb is a word that expresses a state or an action of something

E.g. Go, Write, run, play, eat, and weep

Example sentence

She is driving a car. The word drive is a verb.

 The verbs which express the action of something, but a few verbs also express a state of
something.
 The verb which tell about action of something are called dynamic verb e.g. go, come, play,
run, drink
 State of something are called stative verbs e.g seem, resemble, consist of , belong to, be,
impress

Verbs are divided into two types: regular and irregular verb

A verb whose past simple and past participle are formed simply by adding ed – regular verb

Irregular verbs are formed with ed

NOUN

A noun is word that names a place, a person, a thing, an animal or an idea e.g. table, chair, new York,
computer, rabbit.

Example: he made a chair

Nouns can be divided into following types: common noun and proper noun, countable and
uncountable noun

Common Nouns: is a non-specific person, place

Common nouns are further classified into:

 Abstract nouns – things you cannot see or touch (e.g., bravery, joy)
 Collective nouns – words to describe groups (e.g., team, choir)
 Compound nouns – nouns made up of more than one word (e.g., court-martial,
pickpocket, water bottle)
 Concrete nouns – things you can see or touch (e.g., tree, cloud)
 Non-countable nouns (mass nouns) – things you cannot count (e.g., food, music)
 Gender-specific nouns – words which are definitely male or female (e.g., vixen,
actress)
 Verbal nouns – nouns derived from verbs (e.g., a building, an attack)
 Gerunds – nouns that represent actions (e.g., running fast, guessing a number)

Proper Nouns: A proper noun, on the other hand, is a specific person, place, or thing.

Adverb

An adverb is a word that modifies a verb or an adjective or any other adverb in a sentence e.g Sarah
is laughing loudly

 Adverb modifying a verb: He answered the question quickly.


 Adverb modifying an adjective e.g.: they were joyously happy
 Adverb modifying other adverb: they were laughing too loudly

Types of adverb

Adverb of manner: Happily, sadly, easily, rudely

Adverb of place: Here, There, near, outside

Adverb of time: now, yesterday, today, late, tonight

Adverb of frequency: sometimes, often, usually, seldom, frequently, and daily

Pronoun

Pronoun is a word which is used instead of a noun. E.g. she, he, they, it, him, its

Preposition

A preposition is a word which expresses relationship of a noun or a noun to another words of the
sentence.

A preposition is used before a noun or pronoun to show the relationship of the same noun or
pronoun to other words of the sentence. E.g He was sitting on a table

Adjective

An adjective is a word which modifies a noun or pronoun e.g hot tea, old man, white shirt

Sentence

A handsome boy won the competition
