Heat Exchangers - Meo Class 3: 1) Types of Heat Exchagers?

The document discusses different types of heat exchangers, including their advantages and disadvantages. It describes plate heat exchangers as being compact and simple with high heat transfer efficiency but high costs. Shell and tube heat exchangers are less expensive with lower pressure drops but lower efficiency. The document provides steps for detecting leaks in both plate and shell and tube heat exchangers, as well as guidelines for maintenance and inspections.

Heat exchangers - meo class 3

1) Types of heat exchagers?

 Shell and tube heat exchanger.

 Plate heat exchanger.

2) What are the advantages and

disadvantages of plate heat exchanger?

Advantages

 Compact and simple in size.

 For dismantling no extra space is required.
 Deposits reduced by turbulent flow.
 Its maintenance is simple and can be easily clean.
 Capacity can be increased by adding plates in pairs.
 Heat transfer efficiency is more.

Disadvantages

 High initial cost because expensive titanium plates are used.

 Increased pressure drop due to over tightening of clamping bolts.
 Dismantling and assembling should done carefully.
 Pressure drop by plate cooler is higher than tube cooler.
 Finding leakage is difficult .
 Titanium is noble metal so other parts of cooling system are susceptible to
corrosion.

3) What are the advantages and

disadvantages of shell and tube type heat
exchanger?
Advantages

 Tube coolers are prefered for lubricating oil cooling because of the pressure
differential.
 Less expensive compare to plate type heat exchanger.
 In refrigeration system tubular cooler act as receiver.
 Pressure drop across the cooler is less.
 Leakage in the tube can be found easily because pressure test is easy.

Disadvantages

 Whole system can be protected using sacrificial anode.

 Heat transfer efficiency is less as compare plate type heat exchanger.
 It requires more space as compare to plate type heat exchanger.
 Its capacity can not be increased.
 Maintenance and cleaning of cooler is difficult because it requires enough space
for removal of tube nest at one end.

4) How to detect leak in shell and tube heat

exchanger?

 Isolate and drain the heat exchanger.

 Take big vessel and fill it with water then remove the tube stack and put one end
in water and blow pressurized air in tubes one by one, bubble will come out from leaky
tube.
 First close the sea water valve of shell and tube type of heat exchanger then
remove the end cover, start the lube oil pump so oil will start coming out from leaky
tube.

5) How to detect leak in plate heat

exchanger?

 Leak in the plate type heat exchanger can be found by visual inspection of the
plate surface.
 First clean the plates and sprayed fluorescent dye penetrant on one side and
defect can be seen on other side with ultra-violate light.
6) Maintenance of heat exchangers?

 Before maintenance, isolate the system by closing the all valves for media and
medium.
 Drain the remaining liquid using the drain valve.
 We can remove deposits with the help of wire brush if its not so hard.
 Fouling can take place out side of the tube in oil coolers and heaters, this can be
removed by chemical flushing.
 Renew the cover gasket if it is damaged.
 Anodes on the cover of heat exchanger are renewed if required.
 After cleaning the heat exchanger flush it with fresh water to remove remaining
chemical or dirt from surface.
 In plate type heat exchanger, plates surface is cleaned by brush and methods
recommended by manufacturer.(do not use sharp edge tool)
 While cleaning make sure that you do not damage the plate seals.
 If you found damaged seals then renew it.
 Make sure evenly tight all the bolts otherwise it will leak.

7) Why baffles are provided in heat

exchanger?

 It directs the flow across the tubes as liquid flows through the cooler and
increase the heat transfer.
 Efficiency.
 It also support the tubes.

8) What expansion arrangement is provided

in shell and tube type heat exchanger?

 In its one side tubes are fixed and other side two floating rings are provided for
the expansion of the tubes.

9) Where tell tale hole is provided and

function of that?
 Tell tale hole is provided between the two floating ring and it gives pre warning
in case of leakage.

10) What checks you carried out in plate heat

exchanger?

 Measure the distance of plates at different studs and note it down.

 Check for any cracks on plate surface.
 Condition of rubber joint.
 Check for the corrosion.
 Check for any distortion.
 Condition of gasket.
