3 IGV-SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
IGV means Inlet Guide Vanes, a set of vanes located around the air inlet, which can be
turned from complete closed to full open (0-86°) by a mechanical drive controlled by the
Speedtronic-System. The IGV-temperature-control is operated from the HMI-Display
(Auto, Manual, Setpoints).
To prevent possible pulsation in the gas turbine during acceleration and deceleration, the
variable inlet guide vanes are installed in the aft end of the turbine's inlet casing.
Hydraulic fluid under high pressure is required to operate the control components of the
gas turbine and the variable inlet guide vane mechanism, it is provided by the hydraulic
supply system.
The variable vanes are modulated in conjunction with the control of compressor bleed air
(see Cooling and Sealing Air System), to permit rapid and smooth turbine starts and shut-
downs without compressor surge and to control air mass flow on certain load conditions.
During start-up, the inlet guide vanes will open to a minimum angle and subsequently
modulate to the full open position as gas turbine loads and the exhaust temperature
reaches the IGV control reference. In this mode, exhaust temperature is maximized for
part-load operation which is desirable for heat recovery (combined-cycle mode).
When IGV temperature control is turned “off”, IGV control of exhaust temperature is re-
scheduled to modulate at a constant temperature reference. Holding the IGV’s closed at
less than quarter load helps to avoid combustor pulsations. They go full open as tempera-
ture exceeds the reference (simple-cycle mode).
At full speed the angle of the vanes must be more than 50 degrees open and is regulated
automatically depending on the conditions up to maximum of 86°.
If a turbine trip occurs and the pressure of the hydraulic system drops, the stored hydrau-
lic oil pressure of the accumulator in the supply is used to drive the guide vanes in the full
open position.
