DESCRIPTION

3 IGV-SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
IGV means Inlet Guide Vanes, a set of vanes located around the air inlet, which can be
turned from complete closed to full open (0-86°) by a mechanical drive controlled by the
Speedtronic-System. The IGV-temperature-control is operated from the HMI-Display
(Auto, Manual, Setpoints).
To prevent possible pulsation in the gas turbine during acceleration and deceleration, the
variable inlet guide vanes are installed in the aft end of the turbine's inlet casing.
Hydraulic fluid under high pressure is required to operate the control components of the
gas turbine and the variable inlet guide vane mechanism, it is provided by the hydraulic
supply system.
The variable vanes are modulated in conjunction with the control of compressor bleed air
(see Cooling and Sealing Air System), to permit rapid and smooth turbine starts and shut-
downs without compressor surge and to control air mass flow on certain load conditions.
During start-up, the inlet guide vanes will open to a minimum angle and subsequently
modulate to the full open position as gas turbine loads and the exhaust temperature
reaches the IGV control reference. In this mode, exhaust temperature is maximized for
part-load operation which is desirable for heat recovery (combined-cycle mode).
When IGV temperature control is turned “off”, IGV control of exhaust temperature is re-
scheduled to modulate at a constant temperature reference. Holding the IGV’s closed at
less than quarter load helps to avoid combustor pulsations. They go full open as tempera-
ture exceeds the reference (simple-cycle mode).
At full speed the angle of the vanes must be more than 50 degrees open and is regulated
automatically depending on the conditions up to maximum of 86°.
If a turbine trip occurs and the pressure of the hydraulic system drops, the stored hydrau-
lic oil pressure of the accumulator in the supply is used to drive the guide vanes in the full
open position.

4 COMPONENT DESCRIPTION IGV SYSTEM

4.1 GUIDE VANE ACTUATION

The modulated inlet guide vane actuating system is comprised of the following compo-
nents: servovalve 90TV-1, position sensors (LVTD) 96TV-1 and 96TV-2, solenoid valve
20TV-1, hydraulic dump valve VH3-1 and control ring HM3-1.
A filter FH6-1 is installed in the hydraulic supply line ahead of the inlet guide vane ser-
vovalve. See hydraulic circuit. When the inlet guide vane solenoid 20TV-1 is energized,
lube oil is fed through an orifice to the dump valve VH3-1.
The lube oil pressure operates the dump valve to allow hydraulic oil pressure to flow to
90TV-1. Control of 90TV-1 will port hydraulic pressure to operate the variable inlet guide
vane actuator. For normal shutdown, inlet guide vane actuation is the reverse of the
startup sequence; the compressor bleed valves will open when the generator breaker is
opened. The inlet guide vanes will ramp to the full closed position as a
function of temperature corrected speed.
In the event of a turbine trip, the 11th stage bleed valves will open and the inlet guide
vanes will ramp to the closed position as a function of temperature corrected speed.

4.2 PULSATION PROTECTION CONTROL

The inlet guide vanes are automatically positioned during a start-up and a shut-down se-
quence to avoid gas turbine compressor pulsation.
The pulsation limit is expressed as a function of IGV angle and corrected speed, shown
by a broken line. Corrected speed is a compressor design parameter that is a function of
the actual running speed of the compressor and the inlet air temperature.
The control system utilizes the measured variables of turbine speed and ambient tem-
perature to determine the IGV angle and automatically modulate them to that position.
Note that the control program is set to avoid IGV operation which would result in negative
pressure at the 5th stage extraction, air used for bearing seals.

4.3 EXHAUST TEMPERATURE CONTROL

For applications such as a regenerative cycle in a generator in the gas turbine
exhaust, it is desirable to maximize the exhaust temperature. The control program for
such turbines includes an exhaust temperature control which automatically holds the IGV
at a minimum angle during part-load operations. A target is provided to permit the opera-
tor to select this mode of operation.

DESCRIPTION

4.4 VARIABLE INLET GUIDE VANE SYSTEM, HM3-1

The modulated inlet guide vane system is activated with high pressure oil (OH-1) from the
hydraulic supply system. Electronic control signals activate and position the inlet guide
vanes, both during normal operation and under trip conditions, through the action of ser-
vovalve 90TV-1, hydraulic dump valve VH3-1, position sensors 96TV–1 and 96TV–2 and
hydraulic activating cylinder ACV1-1.
During normal operation lube oil (OLT) is pressurized and dump valve VH3-1 is energized
which allows hydraulic oil from the hydraulic supply system to flow through servovalve
90TV-1. The controlled or modulated position of inlet guide vane servovalve 90TV-1, as
established by the SPEEDTRONIC control system, determines the flow of hydraulic oil
through the servovalve and dump valve VH3-1 to position the guide vane hydraulic actua-
tor in the modulated mode.
In a trip condition, lube oil is dumped by action of dump valve 20TV-1. This causes inlet
guide vane dump valve VH3-1 to move to the dump position by action of the spring return
feature, thereby dumping actuator cylinder oil which closes the inlet guide vanes.
When the turbine is at rest, the inlet guide vane angle position is at the designed closed
position. This closed guide vane angle is the position established to limit the air flow
through the compressor during the turbine accelerating and decelerating sequence.
