Computation of Transients
Computation of Transients
Introduction:
Transient phenomenon is an aperiodic function and does not last longer. After effects of such
transients may lead to a complete black out in a city or shutting down of a plant or resulting in
fire etc. Any power system can be visualized made up of linear impedance elements i.e.
resistance, inductance and capacitance. Current and Voltage distributions change due to some
sudden fault. This redistribution is generally accompanied by a transient period.
There are two components of voltages in a power system during transient period
Fundamental Frequency voltages
Natural Frequency voltages
There is also a third component known as harmonic voltages resulting from unbalanced currents
flowing in rotating machines in which the reactance’s in the direct and quadrature axes are equal.
The Natural frequency voltages appear immediately after the sudden occurrence of a fault. They
simply add to the fundamental frequency voltages. Thus the transient voltage can be treated as a
combination of fundamental and natural frequency voltages.
