Engine Indicators
OUTLINE
This engine indicator records the pressure change
in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, a re-
ciprocating steam engine, an air compressor and a
gas compressor. With knowing pressure change,
M2 type indicators (MM20) M3 type indicators (MM30)
performance whether or not respective cylinders are
functioning effectively is judged without unevenness,
and output horsepower is calculated.
As our mechanical type indicator is reasonably
priced, and additionally, measuring is easily per-
formed, this indicator is extensively applied to a ma-
rine internal combustion engine, demonstrating ex-
cellent reliability. Other than the type which draws a
curve on recording paper, a pressure indicator, which
can easily and rapidly measure the maximum pres-
sure at job site, exist. In a MT maximum indicator,
the maximum pressure is indicated by a indicator,
therefore direct reading is possible.

1. The piston with the liner (for only M2 and M3) and spring are optionally sold when requested. A scale and a cleaning rod are supplied for each piston size except when
the piston with liner and the spring are of the standard size.
2. Valves and cocks for indicators are also optionally available.
SPRING MARKINGS
It is necessary to choose the spring corresponding to the pressure of the engine to be measured. The spring has a
carved stamp, namely the spring marking, on it. The piston with liner, and the scale having the same marking as the
spring should be used together. This marking expresses the height of the indicator diagram for 0.1MPa pressure in
millimeters, with the maximum pressure in MPa. The pressure allowance is within 1% of the maximum pressure.
For an example, a spring marking of
5.10mm = 0.1MPa 6MPa piston 9.06mm on the side of a spring seat means that this spring
measures up to 6MPa maximum pressure using the piston (with liner) of 9.06mm diameter (size 1/5) , and that the
0.5mm height of the indicator diagram corresponding to 0.1MPa pressure; therefore, the pressure should be read using
the scale of 0.5mm = 0.1MPa.
The piston area of 1/2 in2 (322.7mm dia.) is designated as size 1/1. Subsequently, a half of 1/2 in2 is designated as
1/2, and one fifth, as 1/5.

q Peak indicator q
Construction:
This peak indicator is composed of three elements: a check valve, a pres-
sure gauge and an exhaust valve. Measuring pressure P enters the interior
through the check valve, however cannot flow backwards because of the
check valve. The measuring pressure continues to flow into the interior until
the interior pressure is increased to the maximum of fluctuating measuring
pressure. Therefore, when the indicator stops fluctuation, its indication is read
to determine the maximum pressure. After measuring the maximum pres-
sure, the exhaust valve is opened to make the pressure zero.
As the indicator is an oil filled pressure gauge, excellent vibration resistance
and heat resistance are demonstrated.
