Iot Project Proposal

This document provides a project brief for an IoT design project by students at Batangas State University. The project aims to create a prototype that can monitor sound levels in a classroom and trigger an alarm if noise exceeds a certain threshold. A team of 6 students will design, build, and test a device using a sound sensor and buzzer connected to a NodeMCU microcontroller. It will send sound level data to a Blynk app. The project aims to reinforce teamwork and engineering design skills while keeping costs under PHP 2,000. A methodology is outlined, and the specific components and their costs are listed.

Section: Electronics Communication Engineering (ECE) – 1103

Learning Outcomes:

• Acquire basic awareness of engineering codes of ethics and impact of engineering solutions on

society.

• Use the engineering design process to create effective problem statements, and design, build,

test, and analyze a simple prototype product that addresses realistic constraints and system

requirements, while using basic project management techniques.

• Use appropriate modern engineering tools and software to collect and analyze data, to describe

and predict the behavior of designs, and to justify design decisions based on appropriate models.

• Develop professional behavior in the areas of punctuality, time management, and meeting

• Write a project report and create a multimedia presentation to develop written and oral

communication skills following technical communication guidelines which include formatting,

explaining and justifying aspects of the project.

• Evaluate the quality of their own work and the work of others through self and peer assessment.

Objective:

The specific goals for this project are:

▪ Exercise and reinforce team skills: cooperation, delegation

▪ Design a working Internet of Things (IoT) prototype adhering to strict constraints

▪ Document your design process, from initial brainstorming through final testing and

evaluation

▪ Build, test, redesign your prototype as necessary

▪ Present your prototype for testing and evaluation by your peers

The sound level of a normal conversation between people is on the lower end of the

decibel scale. Typically the lowest decibel sounds like human breathing, whispers and the sounds

of steam rising are approximately between 10 and 40 decibels, respectively. Although it may be

surprising, the average decibel level of human speech isn't much louder. The sound level of

normal conversation is between 50 and 65 decibels, speaking generally.

In a variety of school settings, the Sound Level Sensor enables you to easily measure

sound level in decibels (dB). Simply connect and collect — the use of this sensor requires no

background knowledge of sound level weighting, response times, or the decibel scale.

Project overview

The project entitled “IoT Design: Real-Time Noise Pollution Alert” entails a concept

which can monitor classroom sound levels, measure reverberation time, and investigate sound

insulation. The mini project will compose of sensor specifically the big sound sensor, and a

buzzer that will serve as a signifier that the sound reaches its limit, this will show the application

of electronics in accordance to our field in engineering. Also, the components will function

effectively with the use of different codes through programming. The concept provides a

monitoring system using Blynk app that will observe the level of sound in a room. The sensor

registers information of sound level on a specific time (measurements each predetermined

interval of time) or continuous (levels reached during a period of time) in the area in which it is

located. One can on and off the buzzer to notify the people in the room that the sound level they

are producing are higher than what it should be.

To meet the project requirements, we will need to perform the following:

1. The proposal will be submitted to the instructor on or before the deadline.

2. Each member will be assigned to do a specific task, but as a team we will brainstorm as many

ideas as possible for our mini project. The recorder will documents the ideas.

3. The final production model of our project will be based on the original ideas proposed by the

group.

4. The mini project will be tested by the team and we will ask for feedback from the instructor.

After testing, we will make a revisions to our project based on the comments given.

5. We will present our work experiences through oral and/or short video documentation. Project

will also be presented in a gallery walk.

Components and their prices

The following components will be used in the project entitled “IoT Design: Real-Time

Noise Pollution Alert”. The team followed the project budget of not exceeding by Php 2,000.00.

The prices and units of the components can be seen below:

Components Units Price

NodeMCU 1 Php 488.00
Sound sensor – Big sound 1 Php 98.00
Sound sensor – Small sound 1 Php 100.00
Buzzer alarm 1 Php 45.00
PCB Universal 1 Php 35.00
Female to male jumping wire 6 Php 4.00 = Php 24.00
Male to male jumping wire 4 Php 4.00 = Php 16.00
Stackable female header 15 pins 2 Php 15.00 = Php 30.00
Total: Php 836.00

Methodology

The following steps were done by the team to make the IoT Design: Real-Time Noise

Pollution Alert successful:

1. Brainstorming.

2. Designing.

3. Buying and preparing the components.

4. Preparing the Blynk app.

5. Coding.

6. Check the code and upload.

7. Connect the Analog output of sound sensor – big sound to the AO of the NodeMCU.

8. Connect the Ground of the sound sensor to the G of NodeMCU.

9. Connect the power source of the sound sensor to the 3V3 of NodeMCU.

10. Connect the buzzer to NodeMCU. For the polarity, the black wire of the buzzer is for

the 3V3 and the red one is for the D5 of NodeMCU.

11. Testing the prototype.

12. Redesigning. Adding another sound sensor which is small sound to make the

prototype sensitive to different frequencies of sound.

13. Testing the prototype.

14. Soldering.

15. Designing for an aesthetic presentation of the prototype.
